The Tournament:

The formation of what now is known as the ASB Classic occurred when Ari Hallenberg and Global Sports saw a hole in the marketplace and asked Tennis New Zealand about creating an event in Auckland.

The first staging was held in 1985 as part of the 1986 tour and it moved to its current pre-Australian Open spot on the calendar, New Zealand's lone stop, in 1996. It was named the WTA's Tournament Of The Year/APAC in 2014. Src: WTA

About Auckland:

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city with a population of nearly 1.5 million. Auckland boasts a cosmopolitan blend of European, Maori, Asian and Polynesian cultures, as well as a natural environment that encourages visitors to embrace the Great Outdoors.

The city is based around 2 large harbours with the centrepiece being the Sky Tower which has views of the vibrant Viaduct Harbour district lined with bars and cafes. Auckland Domain, the city's oldest park, is based around an extinct volcano and home to the formal Wintergardens. Near Downtown, Mission Bay Beach has a seaside promenade.

It's rugged coastline and terrain was formed from volcanic ridges of lava flows. Known as the "City of Sails" - Auckland has more boats per capita than any other city in the world. Rangitoto Island sits majestically off the coast.

Auckland is regularly listed among the top 10 of the World's most liveable cities.

Nice, Serena entered this one instead of Brisbane (because of Doubles?), she should win!

Not because of doubs, but because of Venus. Vee has played Auckland for many years and stated awhile back she would try to get Serena to come.

If you like to watch doubles - here is a link to the entire match Careena played - nice nickname by the way - bit like a showmatch with highlights - Danish commentary. Watch it before it's removed

That's a tough first round -- worthy of a final if they're both playing their best.
I was just thinking the same thing. kutzy is a very tough first round opponent on hardcourt..I saw her just demolished the top seeds last summer in Cincy. Serena is not going to be able to play herself into match form.. however I glad she is competing early before AO begins..
