One of the things my father, brother and I did on a recent vacation was to listen to music that moved us years ago. I play a little guitar and my dad has plucked on his banjo for years, so we watched a lot of videos to show my younger brother (who never got into much of that) what real musicianship is when compared to rock star guitarists most folks think of when they think of great guitarists. Now, Clapton (really a blues junkie like Stevei Ray Vaugn), Hendrix, and Van Halen are fantastic players, but there are some that are just otherworldly in how they play classical, jazz or bebop. Listen to Wes Montgomery or Kenny Burrell or (LORD have mercy) Joe Pass. Then there is the maestro, Andres Segovia, and Narciso Yepes on classical guitar. Flamenco? Paco de Lucia was something to see--so soulful, as if he lived that music. You want speed on a guitar, watch old videos of Paco with Al DiMeola and John McLaughlin. You want to see the best of guitar and banjo, Flatts and Scruggs, Roy Clark and Glen Campbell will fit the bill. Put on ANY of these guys and your mouth drops open at the virtuosity of each player.
