2025 US Open Final: Alcaraz vs. Sinner

To me, it's not a matter of excuse, it's a fact. The two guys put on a better, more competitive U S Open match three years ago.

Maybe the serve was a fact, still Carlos was the better player in other area's and deserved his win full stop

Great statement win for Carlos. Now has 2 slams on each of the three surfaces - the youngest to do it. For context, Rafa and Novak were in their thirties when they achieved that. Mats is the other, he was 23, but his 2 grass court titles were in Australia when it was still transitioning out of mediocrity.

He's back at number one as well. Today’s match is what I meant when I said he’d much better than Sinner, but he’ll need a steady period of dominance to rubberstamp it. Hopefully he focuses on Australia as his priority now. A career Slam at 22 would be 2 years younger than Rafa. Hard to believe he could have two career slams by the age of 23 - still younger than Rafa’s first CS.

I’m getting ahead of myself. Great season for the two of them, with a 3-match H2H in slams which went to the returning world number one.

Delighted for Carlos. He’s the most exciting player to hit tennis since Fedal…

Yes Margaret, i have had a look (and posted before) courtesy flashscore and yes Carlos held the edge by percentage of points won on the first serves 61 percent to Janniks 48.

Who from the current generation is there that could challenge Carlos and/or Sinner ? I can see one or both these guys, controlling the sport for next 3/4 years, unless two more, mentally tough players comes along.

Hard to see anyone coming before the next 3 slams are played. The next most likely player to win a slam after them is still Djokovic, and he’s feeling the strain. There are whole generations of players were eclipsed totally by the Big 3 and that can happen here too. Carlos and Jannik have shared the previous 8 slams, played each other in the last 3 finals, it’s kind of becoming predictable, but not in a bad way. Better that they face each other than Zverev or A.N. Other makes the final, right?

I don’t see anybody who I think can be counted on to disturb them yet. It might happen but there’s nobody trending that direction to say that it will. In fact, I think the most likely is that Carlos starts to really dominate Sinner and move into a class of his own for a few years, with youngsters like Fonseca and others eventually becoming a stronger chasing pack, alongside Sinner..

I think at one point I compared De Minaur to David Ferrer, if only in that both had/have a high floor and consistent level of good to very good play, but a low ceiling - neither ever wowed me (though I think Ferrer was better at his best, and probably would have won a Slam or two if born 5-10 years earlier). You could add in Casper Ruud as a similar type. For me, De Minaur can win a Masters or two, but I'd be very surprised if he wins a Slam. If you squint, you can imagine Ben Shelton continuing to evolve and going on an explosive run and winning a Slam. I just can't see that with De Minaur.

I'm surprised people don't somewhat compare De Minaur to Patrick Rafter! He's not exactly serving & volleying his way to victory, but his overall game is like that; a lot of hussle play! That's why I was so surprised Pat won back to back USO's b/c his weapons weren't that devastating! If he missed a 1st serve he had to really work to win a point which is why today's players will burn out long before the 20 yr. mark of the Big 3! They can barely make it from week to week due to the stress of today's playing style & speed of the game!

I'm surprised people don't somewhat compare De Minaur to Patrick Rafter! He's not exactly serving & volleying his way to victory, but his overall game is like that; a lot of hussle play! That's why I was so surprised Pat won back to back USO's b/c his weapons weren't that devastating! If he missed a 1st serve he had to really work to win a point which is why today's players will burn out long before the 20 yr. mark of the Big 3! They can barely make it from week to week due to the stress of today's playing style & speed of the game!

I tend to compare more in terms of historical record and "tour identity," than play style.

Replay going on ESPN! I barely surfed by when LIVE! They must have been serving well for 3 sets to be completed in < 2 hrs.! That's amazing these days at this level! Sinner was playing well enuf, but Alcaraz was "the human highlte" reel making great "gets" & changing defense into offense! In the (unlikely) event where both Sinner and Alcaraz are eliminated in an early round then perhaps the now-veteran, also mentally-tough Djokovic could win another Slam next year, probably his last chance to.
He's reached the SF on all four GS this year but interestingly never won a set.

If he reaches the Australian Open final in January, and he doesn’t win it, some talk will switch to what he hasn’t been able to do, questions will start about what his limitations are, but even before the match the chatter about what he might be about to achieve will be huge.

I think for those of us who root for him, our expectations are huge and we’re shocked when he doesn’t live up to them. I know I am, I couldn’t believe he lost the Wimbledon final. I'm glad people are seeing this BS! Carlos is like any other player, totally over-extending himself, but you can be assured he'll complain or break down due to not getting decent rest! I expect this w/ someone his age, but you'd think the people representing him would pull back due to what I"ve been saying about the speed & stress of ftoday's game! Can you imagine either Carlos or Sinner winning b2b Masters like Novak back in the day? Even w/ going BO3, today's players are so spent, it's guaranteed that w/ mininal success, it doesn't carryover as it did in the past!

I actually did think about that. It seemed a little paranoid and blockbuster-movie ish to consider that someone might, what, bomb the US Open? And that the roof would stop it? But, if you were the Secret Service, and you had a say, you'd probably want it closed.
