The Tournament:

The Italian Open, originally called the Italian International Championships, is a tennis tournament held in Rome, Italy. It is one of the most important clay tennis tournaments in the world with the men's competition being an ATP Tour Masters 1000 event on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour, and the women's competition technically being a WTA 1000 event on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour. The two events were combined in 2011. The tournament is played on clay courts, currently during the second week of May. The event is also known as the "Rome Masters" for male edition, as well as sponsored name "Internazionali BNL d'Italia". Rafael Nadal has won the men's singles title a record ten times.

About Rome:

Rome is the capital city of Italy. It is also the capital of the Lazio region, the centre of the Metropolitan City of Rome, and a special comune named Comune di Roma Capitale. With 2,860,009 residents in 1,285 km2 (496.1 sq mi), Rome is the country's most populated comune and the third most populous city in the European Union by population within city limits. The Metropolitan City of Rome, with a population of 4,355,725 residents, is the most populous metropolitan city in Italy. Its metropolitan area is the third-most populous within Italy. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber. Vatican City (the smallest country in the world) is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city. Rome is often referred to as the City of Seven Hills due to its geographic location, and also as the "Eternal City". Rome is generally considered to be the "cradle of Western civilization and Christian culture", and the centre of the Catholic Church.

Rome draw is out
I have done the projected QFs
Sabalenka (1) vs Zheng (8)
Gauff (4) vs Andreeva (7)
Paolini (6) vs Pegula (3)
Keys (5) vs Swiatek (2)

Fun Fact,
Among the players with multiple appearances at the event in the Open Era, Chris Evert holds the best winning percentage at the Italian Open ( 92.3%)
Iga Swiatek (90.9%) has the second best percentage

Good to see Petra Kvitova win her first match back from maternity leave, 75 61 over Camelia Begu. Kvitova even in her prime has never played her best tennis in Rome, she did make the QFs in 2015.
Kvitova will face Ons Jabeur in the next round

18 yo Q Canadian Vicotoria Mboko ( I did a post on her before when I received a video of Mboko) gets her first tour level clay court win over Zucchini 62 63
One to watch over the next couple of years
Mboko has won 5 ITF and is 33-3 across all levels this year

Kostyuk means business just handed a bagel to Eala 6-0
As I have mentioned many times Eala needs to employ a 'serving coach' her 2nd serve is weak and very attackable for starters
This is becoming a Rout for Eala, Kostyuk up 4-0 in the 2nd set, I thought Kostyuk would win over Eala, not like the current score,
Finally Eala gets on the score board in the 2nd set.
Kostyuk d Eala 60 61, Marta dropped just 5 points on serve
Back to the drawing board for Eala too many people 'over hyped' her when she defeated Swaitek and Keys in Miami, her results after that have been poor
Eala will be teaming up with Gauff in the doubles.

Matches
Thursday 8th May,
Some of the top seeds are in action in their first round matches

Swiatek (2) Defending champion, has a very good draw, lets see if she can defend her points at Rome, she is up against WC Italian Cocciaretto
Paolini (6) with her new coach Marc Lopez, vs L.Sun
Pegula (3) vs fellow American Kreuger
Keys (5) vs Gracheva
Badosa (9) vs Osaka
Other interesting match ups,
Jabeur (27) vs P.Kvitova
Muchova (12) vs Bronzetti
Svitolina (16) vs Maneiro

The day was suppose to start with Badosa v Osaka, Badosa withdrew back and LL Golubic is taking Badosa's place
Petra Kvitova also withdrew, ( right lower leg injury) she was to play Jabeur, Jabeur is through to R3 without playing

Iga Swaitek was up to her usual 'delay tactics' you have to play to the pace of the server all the time, blowing her nose, carrying on with her towel, then stalling and putting her hand up to opponent indicating she is not ready is poor form,
Seeds moving on to the next round,
Swaitek (2) Pegula (3) Shnaider (13) Svitolina (16) Ostapenko (17) Mertens (25) Collins (29) Keys (5)

Seeds that lost,
Samsonova (19) Kalinskaya (28) Putintseva (23) Haddad Maia (18)

18 yo Victoria Mboko has some serious talent, a pure ball striker, strong fhand, just won the 1st set 63 over Gauff, still a long way to go in this match, I expect a stronger challenge from Gauff as the match progresses
Gauff d Mboko 36 62 61,, somehow the lack of margin worked for Mboko in the 1st set, she needed to rein it in, in set 2 and 3, also she looked tired to me as the match progressed

I saw her push Vika to the limit, maybe 2 TB's in Miami. She has great rally tolerance from the baseline. Not out there being an UFE like her opponent
