The Tournament:

The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly known simply as Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and is considered by many to be the most prestigious.

It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hardcourt in 1988, Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass.

It continues to honour many long-standing traditions, including a strict dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream, and royal patronage.

WTA legend Martina Navratilova holds the ladies tournament record with nine singles titles. She also has the Open Era record with seven doubles titles. On top of that, she has four mixed doubles crowns, giving her a remarkable 20 Wimbledon triumphs altogether. Others who have dominated the event in the Open Era include Steffi Graf and Serena Williams with seven singles titles and Venus Williams with five.

The Players:

The big question, with all the top players returning to Wimbledon this year, who will grab this year's title? Be on the lookout for several former champs, Serena, Venus, Kvitova with 2 titles, Sharapova and the defending champ Muguruza with one title each. Other seeds to watch out for include newly crowned French Open champion and the #1 seed Simona Halep, 2016 U.S. Open finalist Karolina Pliskova, 2 time slam champ and Wimby finalist Angelique Kerber, hometown favorite Jo Konta, slam champs Stephens, Azarenka, Kuznetsova, Ostapenko and a cast of young guns, mid-level and veteran players all clamoring a chance to hold the Venus Rosewater dish.

Serena appears to have clear path to SF. I hate it when finesse players like Aga and Magdalena fall in Serena's quarter and get crushed by her power.

So neither RG finalist played a warmup. I wonder what kind of form Simona and Ebony Smooth will show.

I don't expect much from Simona here. On the other hand, ES is athletic and it will help her here. Having said that, I don't expect ES to win either. In fact, this is the first time (I believe) she owns a quarter and so most probably she won't even live up to her seeding.

It’s so hard to know what ES will do because I don’t recall if she played any tournaments over the past few weeks

Here is Serena's pre tournament interview .
Good thing is that she is grateful about her seeding instead of complaining about it being too low. However, she claims all players should be tested equally, which I don't buy it. It is natural to test players who have had higher rate of success like her more often. Also, when a player comes back from long lay off, again it is natural to test them often as the long lay off usually is used by players for loading up on special Wheaties.

I saw the last set of that match. Ruse covers her head with towel in every changeover and then today she actually bumped into a ball boy as she was walking with the towel on her head. This is apparently Ruse's first match in the circuit (not just in GSs).

Even though she lost six match points, she did not choke. In fact, about half of them or more were bold shots which did not work out.

Anyway, I am glad Aga won.

Serena needs a refresher on how to present herself to the public and remind herself how much money she has earned from playing tennis. If she has to give samples, so be it. I’d think she would know this from being on tour all these years. Apparently not.

Well I saw her presser yesterday, and she was talking about reading the article and wanting an explanation which I think is fair to put out there. What isn’t smart though is missing a test period. Let everyone else decide if the testing powers aren’t doing their due diligence. I think for Serena that she needs to understand that winners get tested. Nobody gives an eff about someone who can’t win a slam. She especially is going to feel the heat as she can still break records with her wins.

To me, this side of the draw is stacked: Mugu, Simona, Kerbie, Petra, Osaka, Osta, Kontaveit
