God, I hate it. Rog will be playing at 5 a.m. EST. When he plays a qualifier why can't they schedule him for day session so that I can watch it at 7 p.m.

I remember the year Safin beat Sampras in the fourth round, I think, it was 2002, and the match started about 8am here. I was to leave for work at 8.30, so obviously I was hoping it was over quick :snicker but the warm up alone brought the match beginning to 8.15.

Safin won the first two sets and I was still at home - "bringing the missus to the hospital, you wouldn't believe what happened!" - then Pete began a surge and took the third.

Text messages from work: "commiserations on the missus, hope she recovers", "what hospital is she in, we'll send flowers, etc".

Fourth set was a dogfight so I rang them to tell them my mother was gonna be okay.

"Thought it was your wife?"

On a big point in the tiebreak, Sampras clipped the net cord with a forehand, and it fell back on his side. "&@*!"

A liar needs a good memory, but a tennis fan just needs the ball to clear the net, and it'll be okay. Pete went down in four, and it was tetchy and salty between them at the end. Afterwards he was asked about that, and classy as ever, he said he noticed nothing. It brought it home to me the cruelty and stupidity and thoughtlessness of Aussie scheduling. This was the year that Safin lost the final to Johansson, with two Russian bimbos in the players box. He looked exhausted before he even hit a ball...

Bracing for the possibility of an early exit by Fed and/or Rafa, AO Organizers will make sure to place each and every one of their match in centre court (as it is quite unpredictable when either one of them would lose). Good idea.

I moved to Hawaii over the summer, so am only 3 hours later than Sydney time - which is a nice perk for the AO. But unfortunately I don't have cable, so can't watch the matches anyway, except through online stream, which are usually crappy quality. Oh well.

Anyhow, I was surprised to see that Federer and Melzer have only played four times in their careers, despite playing alongside eachother for 17 years. How is that even possible? Anyhow, Roger's up 3-1, although Jurgen won their last match back in 2011 at Monte-Carlo.

One other tidbit. Roger has only ever lost to a player ranked outside of the top 100 at a Slam: Sergiy Stakhovsky in the 2R of Wimbledon in 2013, and Mario Ancic in the 1R of Wimbledon in 2002.

Novak has never lost to a player outside of the top 100 at a Slam. Rafa's lost three times, all at Wimbledon and all 2013-15 (Dustin Brown, Nick Kyrgios, Steve Darcis...there's also Lukas Rosol in 2012, but he was #100).

Have been them (Roger and Novak) injured before? nope and I don't try to find excuses but if they would have had injuries we would have seen something very diferent. And don't start to say something about "the style to play" because every single player has the risk to get injuries and specially Novak that when he is playing it seems that his body is going to divide in two parts like Monfils, it just good luck

I blame Stakhovski's wife for that one.

Well, I don't really, but it's a good excuse to show her picture!

It's not good luck, it's conditioning and yoga in Novak's case that keeps him nimble and bendy. He also doesn't do crazy diving volleys or jump miles into the air for crowd pleasing but ultimately dodgy for the joints type stunts like Monfils who frankly causes his injuries himself with his antics. Of course they all have the chance to get injured, but running after every single ball even when you shouldn't attempt to is of course gonna make anyone more likely to injure themselves. It all comes down to choice. Go for more winners and you don't need to run around defending so much and hence don't run the risk of injury as much.

I agree that Monfils jumps too much all over the court but Novak also runs a lot trying to reach the most difficult ball stretching his legs like a contortionist (ok, the yoga is helping him a lot) and twisting his ankles very often which is a miracle that he has not suffered any bad sprain or something worse. Muzz runs a lot too but his legs seems to be more solid and strong without the need to stretch them so much and less effort than Novak

Zverev in the second set has called the trainer, it seems that his left shoulder is bothering him

He is 2 sets and a break up in the match. So, one cannot possibly accuse him of taking a bathroom break deliberately to spoil (his own) momentum. Sometimes, people need to go.

By the way they don't have the hawk eye and being 40-30 and almost Garcia getting the break they called out a ball that was clearly in
