I agree in theory. It has become very predictable the last few years, and with Rafa out, worse. The game really need new blood to get back the excitement of 20 years ago, when lots of talent was playing. Do you see anyone on the horizon? I don't, but been busy with other things.
This is by far the best generation of tennis players that has ever played the game: Federer, Djokovic, Nadal. It has surpassed any excitement of 20 years ago by a pretty large margin. These guys are legends of the sport, and have given us a tremendous amount of classic matches. Federer and Djokovic will play for the 45th time. Djokovic and Nadal have played even more. Many five setters, even numbers in winning, it does not get better than this. Clearly you have been busy with other things.

"Federer and Djokovic will play for the 45th time" My point exactly. Maybe you enjoy seeing the same players win every slam, good for you, you should be very happy. .

Fed-Djokovic is generally a good match up and yes I do like the bigger names facing off. It comes with a trade off less surprises at slams. You must fancy the ladies draw then I imagine. Apart from Serena winning everything.

Sure didn't take long to find the smart aleck in the group..

And this is the worst young generation that I remember. The players under 27 years old are not able to win any MS and GS . Maybe it's because the ones who now are over that age they started to win at very early age and the generation before too but now......I'm still waiting...maybe Raonic will be the first one?

Britbox, if you are around, why every time that I leave this blog when I come back I have to type again my user name and password? :(

Well said Carol, we have a dry spell it seems in new, young talent. I hope that changes soon.

Just posted this on the QF thread:

Does anybody think that the fact it's a semi rather than a final may work slightly in Federer's favour?

Just a bit of psychology perhaps.... I think Roger might be a little less tight than he's been in the recent final encounters.

Having said that, Melbourne is Novak's back yard in a manner of speaking... and as strongly as I will be rooting for the old campaigner when the match is on... as a prediction I will go with the head and say Novak in 4.
I do think it being a semi could help Roger a bit, and it's an interesting point. It's not yet for all the marbles, and sometimes Djokovic isn't fully engaged mentally in the SFs, though not lately. That said, he'll be sharp for Federer, I presume, and so I think Roger would need some help from him, as basically everyone does these day. Roger less than most, but still. I also went with Djokovic in 4.

Not your imagination Carol.-- Fed, Becker, Sampras, Agassi, Borg, McEnroe, Connors, Djokovic all won slams and some where #1 at 22 or younger.. Just a short list, but yes, it does seem that if a player will be great, it shows early.

Hi Duck, welcome to the board.:yahoo:

The technology and physical demands of tennis game in the last 5-6 years is leaps and bounds different than before that. Poor guys just don't stand a chance with most top 50 professional players. Just the nature of tennis development. And when they do make top 20 or top 10 there have been 3 guys really above everybody else, it's darn near impossible and all stars need to align for somebody else to win a major.

The future looks a little threadbare right now. Agreed, emerging stars are required pronto!

I'm sure you are right, and maybe that's the difference now, thanks for the insight. The old coot in me misses the days when you never knew for sure who would win. The top three now...yep, nobody even close.

Here's to hoping of repeat of RG 2011 (but only for the semis...). Back then nobody gave Federer a shot too, so...
