I’m always struggling to find the right thread to post scientific advances that should interest all of us. So why not dedicate a thread to this topic. Whether it’s medical, one of the pure sciences or even socio-political theory. Have at it.

I’ll start with this

Jeez this would be revolutionary! We would live in a totally different world. We all know and love somebody affected by cancer and admire everything about how they cope, so imagine if this becomes a thing!

The speed and precision of scientific progress is breathless. We really do live in an “age of miracles and wonder..”

Just imagine how much more progress, miracles and wonder we'd be witnessing if the trillions of dollars dedicated to the military industrial complexes were channeled towards something like this. Or pharmaceuticals weren't complete ghouls...

I wonder if there’s anything in this. Or just anti-American propaganda

I’m always fascinated by this, that they experiment on mice to cure humans. Honest question, what can they learn from such a different animal that helps humans?

different animal, but you would be surprised how similar mammals are. The divergence between the two species is relatively recent in the history of earth's evolution, therefore the base genetics are still similar to an amazing degree (we're probably 80 - 90% the same as mice). If you can understand how their remedy fixes the disease in mice, you'll largely understand how it also affects the human brain. Still a lot of work to do, but that pesky 10 - 20% difference could have a whole load of human specific side effects that they'll need to identify and mitigate before they finally nail the cure. This is a HUGE step though

That’s a long essay and I’m definitely interested. I’ll deep dive it some evening. Recently I was chatting with my nephew in London about AI. He told me that when ChatGPT 5 was ready, they switched off 4 - and it turned itself back on. Being habitually lazy I didn’t fact check it. I even might have misremembered what he told me, so I asked the phone earlier today.

The answer scared me:

This guy makes some excellent points. It's amazing how often the stuff Elon Musk says doesn't pass scientific muster...
