I actually started laughing. About 1% of the white population during slavery owned slaves. Some black people owned slaves. This performative self flagellation is something progressives like to do. What about the fact that in some cultures rape was accepted. Are all men forever tainted with the guilt of those actions? When does it end?? Fk outta here! You are responsible for your OWN actions! Be better, be good in your own life time. Acknowledge the past and use it as a template for what NOT to do, but why be guilty of something you aren't responsible for? Make it make sense!

Even that figure is exaggerated. We could say that 1% of the white population in specific countries, in limited time periods, owned slaves (for instance USA for about 3 centuries). Virtually zero percent of Italians, Polish or Swedish (to quote a few examples) ever owned slaves (in post-medieval times. Before that, they might have owned slaves, most likely of their own skin color). And I would like to see actual data to back up that 1%, which is probably exaggerated or at the very least valid only for very limited time spans in the aforementioned countries.

Brutal and inhumane as it is, slavery in post-medieval western civilization is always linked to (political and economical) power concentration. A few (brutal and inhumane) overlords enslave entire populations -- Hitler did the same to Jews (and other peoples) in the 20th century, and we do have modern slavery in the 21st century as well. I have seen it with my eyes.

That’s right. The scandal of the Spartans among other Greeks wasn’t that they had slaves - everybody had slaves - but that they’d enslaved fellow Greeks.

The African sources of the slave trades into Arabia and Europe and the United States, not only enslaved their fellow Africans but sold them to these places.

Thinking of it that way, if reparations are to be paid - and it’s not right that it should be - start in Africa, they’re the sellers who benefited originally from selling the slaves..

It is a simple analysis, but still a very good one. You could make a point that a balance should be found in the middle. If you take both arguments to the extreme, they are both absurd in their own particular way. What for me is particularly disgusting with the newer ones is not the message itself, but the preaching tone to it.

hmmmm... you know what side I'm on in these debates normally, but I have to that first clip? I'm struggling to find a standalone reason for that question to have been justified.
