The Tournament:

The Italian Open, originally called the Italian International Championships, is a tennis tournament held in Rome, Italy. It is one of the most important clay tennis tournaments in the world with the men's competition being an ATP Tour Masters 1000 event on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour, and the women's competition technically being a WTA 1000 event on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour. The two events were combined in 2011. The tournament is played on clay courts, currently during the second week of May. The event is also known as the "Rome Masters" for male edition, as well as sponsored name "Internazionali BNL d'Italia". Rafael Nadal has won the men's singles title a record ten times.

About Rome:

Rome is the capital city of Italy. It is also the capital of the Lazio region, the centre of the Metropolitan City of Rome, and a special comune named Comune di Roma Capitale. With 2,860,009 residents in 1,285 km2 (496.1 sq mi), Rome is the country's most populated comune and the third most populous city in the European Union by population within city limits. The Metropolitan City of Rome, with a population of 4,355,725 residents, is the most populous metropolitan city in Italy. Its metropolitan area is the third-most populous within Italy. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber. Vatican City (the smallest country in the world) is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city. Rome is often referred to as the City of Seven Hills due to its geographic location, and also as the "Eternal City". Rome is generally considered to be the "cradle of Western civilization and Christian culture", and the centre of the Catholic Church.

BTW,
Nicolas Jarry last years runner up to Zverev has not withdrawn, in Rome, after I did further research, I was suspicious, when his replacement was named Juanito Jarry, and could not find any information on him, also Mrzz who follows a lot of smaller clay tournaments also confirmed he didnt know of a player Juanito Jarry
Whoever put up the format of withdrawals and who is in and out was a joke, for people ( like myself and also tennis journalists) who use the format for this usually correct format for tournaments
The withdrawals are as I posted before,
Monfils, Nishikori and Djokovic

Rome draw is out
Sinner and Alcaraz are on opposite halves
Alcaraz is in Zverev half.
I am hoping we have a separate post for Rome Masters instead of using the General News
Anyway for the time being I have done the projected QFs
Sinner (1) vs Ruud (6)
Zverev (2) vs Musetti (8)
Alcaraz (3) vs Draper (5)
Fritz (4) vs de Minaur (7)

Mrrz,
We do have a potential Fonseca v Rublev in round 2
Watching a practice video of Fonseca practicing with Dimitrov in Rome, he seemed to be in good spirits smiling a lot.

Fabio Fognini has announced that this is his last Italian Open. He didn't exactly say that he was retiring here, but he implied it. As we discussed here recently, it's time.

Great minds Moxie I was just about to post that news,

"I want to give space to young people, thats right. I had a great career and I'm happy, but as in all things there is a beginning and an end"

I am surprised that Q Burruchaga d Italian Sonego 62 63, though players coming through qualifying do have a advantage with more match play

Aussie Jordan Thompson extends his H2H 5-0 over Frenchman Perricard in 3 sets 36 63 76(5) Perricard has not lived up to his 'hype' earlier, players have worked out how to play him Thompson certainly has !

Matteo Berrettini who has been under an injury cloud with a recurring abdominal injury says he will play Rome

Interesting match ups, starts at 11.00 local time
Thursday May 8th,

Arnaldi vs RBA, Matteo has good potential, and he made the QFs at Madrid, where Draper only allowed him 4 games, defeating him 60 64., lets see if he can redeem himself in his home tournament
Nardi WC vs Cobolli first meeting on clay between the 2 Italians
Tien vs Opelka (PR) lets see if Tien who is a good returner, he will have to be to return the bombs headed his way from Opelka, this is their first meeting,
N. Jarry last years R/U vs H.Gaston this will be their first meeting

The match I am looking forward to is, on the Super tennis Arena, which starts at 11.00 this match is 2nd up on the Super tennis arena,
F.Marozsan vs J. Fonseca this will be their first meeting

Matteo in real trouble. Bautista Agut is playing some vintage RBA tennis, and Arnaldi looks a bit lost out there. Home town pressure?
Nico Jarry, playing as "Juanito Jarry" in this tournament, is up a set and a break on Gaston.

You solved the mystery then... Thanks.

He completed his win against Gaston, who I found out recently that was once caught on video cheating in a most obnoxious, inexcusable and shockingly way (I saw it). What these people are thinking???

Yes, it's his alter ego as a Puerto Rican rapper.

So what did he do? I think you've mentioned it before, but I don't keep a list.

I didn't, actually, but I would bet someone else did. During a point, in which he was on the defensive, he put his hand in his pocket, took a ball out of it, tossed it on the ground, to stop the point (According to ATP rules, when a ball falls from a player's pocket, a "let" is called. If it falls a second time, then the player loses the point).

Too bad for him it was caught on camera.

I do not want to keep a list either, but lately those little things are rubbing me the wrong way.

Didn't @MargaretMcAleer mentioned it is the name of his new born baby? I understood from your post (maybe just my imagination) that he found a way to enter the tournament using his son's name.

I wouldn't say I'm concerned about the long term, but there's a sense of coming back to earth with Fonzie. I don't think we're in a space of "big breakout at any time" and 2025 is going to be more of a "get used to the ATP tour" year.

RBA too good for Matteo, agree home town pressure probably was a factor
Jarry too good for Gaston defeated him in SS 76(4) 64
