I don't think it would've made a difference. Graf and Novotna both had superior games (including marvellous sliced back-hands) perfectly suited to lawn. That was the era where the courts played faster and by the second week of the championships, the courts would dry up (the area where they would take the first step in order to volley) and develop to a lower, sometime-unpredictable bouncing surface.
