Qatar Open
The Qatar Open is played on outdoor hard courts at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, Qatar.

Qatar
Doha is the capital of Qatar with a population of 1.35million. The city is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf. Once a British protectorate, it was known for its pearl trade and is now sustained by its oil wealth.

Ringing its downtown waterfront are numerous parks and the Corniche Promenade. On a man-made island, the I.M. Pei–designed Museum of Islamic Art houses an extensive collection from across the Muslim world. At Souq Waqif, a traditional market, vendors offer goods like clothing, crafts and spices.

Seeing this event starts 1 week after the first GS of the year, the AO, the WTA has to look closely for next year at the scheduling of this tournament as 11 Top 40 players have withdrawn including the No 1 ranked player Sabalenka and R/U at the AO 2026.
2 late withdrawals
Krejcikova citing left knee injury
Badosa citing right hip inury

Yes, it's too close. Still a pretty solid field though even with all the withdrawals.

Yes, Anisimova defending champion, though her form at the AO was disappointing and the return of Zheng after her elbow surgery and Rybakina the AO champion,

Fun Fact,
Since 1990, Vera Zvonareva ( 41 yo 154 d) is now just the 4th player aged 40+ to win a Tier 1/ WTA1000 main draw match after Kimiko Date, Serena Williams and Venus WiIliams.
Every time I see towels at a tournament it reminds me of Bepa aka Zvonareva, she used to make me laugh when she sat down in a break of play and put her towel all over her head :)

Interesting match ups,
Monday 9th February,

Anisimova (3) defending champion v K. Pliskova
Andreeva (5) vs Linette
Noskova (9) vs Joint
Tauson (11) vs Siniakova
Zheng vs Kenin, Zheng who had elbow surgery in July 2025, Zheng has been No 4 in the WTA rankings, spent roughly 7 to 8 months away from competition, missing the USO 2025 and AO 2026., she has a hard first round match against Kenin

What a waste of time for me watching an uninspired Tauson playing Siniakova. Is it because she had to play in a W1000 event as a top 20 player or what? 28 UFE ?????

Quite frankly Hoergren this WTA1000 event should not be played just after 1 week after the AO
There was 11 Top 20 players withdrew, also another couple of players withdrew yesterday, hopefully the WTA look closely at this event in 2027

A good first round win from Zheng, who had been off the tour for 7 months due to elbow surgery, I thought she would have had trouble with Kenin who can be a tough cookie to play against but not the case
Zheng hit 20 Aces, Kenin hit 1
Zheng hit 43 winners, Kenin 8
Zheng won 46 61 62, well done !

Emma Raducanu just retired in her match against Osorio a match she should have won, Osorio ranked No 80,
This is par for the course with Emma, even though she reached her first final since winning the USO in 2021, the other day, her fitness levels are poor, being a part time player on the tour dosent help her cause
Osorio through to the next round 26 46 2-0
BTW Raducanu also retired in her last WTA1000 event when she was losing 1`-6 1-4 to Li in Wuhan

I have been watching Anisimova's match the defending champion, quite frankly she is struggling against Pliskova who has been off the tour for 1 year after having ankle surgery and has just come back at the AO, using a PR
Going 3 sets as Pliskova won the 2nd set 76(3)
