The Tournament:

The Indian Wells Masters, also known as the Indian Wells Open and BNP Paribas Open is an annual tennis tournament usually held in early- and mid-March at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, United States. The current owner is Larry Ellison, executive chairman and co-founder of Oracle. The current tournament director is former world No. 2 player Tommy Haas. The tournament is a Masters 1000 event on the men's tour and is a WTA 1000 event on the women's tour.

Between 1974 and 1976 it was non-tour event and between 1977 and 1986 it was a secondary tournament of the Grand Prix Tennis Tour but in 1987 it was upgraded to be part of the Grand Prix Super Series, the series of nine tournaments just below the four majors and the year-end finals in importance. It took the place of the Philadelphia Indoor event as the first Super Series event of the year. The event is one of two tour events (along with the Miami Open), other than the Majors, in which main draw play extends beyond eight days. The women's main draw usually starts on Wednesday and the men's main draw starts on Thursday. Both finals are held on Sunday of the following week. Both singles main draws include 96 players in a 128-player grid, with the 32 seeded players getting a bye (a free pass) to the second round.

The tournament is played on hardcourt and is the best-attended tennis tournament outside the four Grand Slam tournaments, it is often called the "fifth Grand Slam". It has the second-largest permanent tennis stadium in the world, behind New York City's Arthur Ashe Stadium.

About Indian Wells:

Indian Wells is a city in Riverside County, California, in the Coachella Valley. Incorporated in 1967, it lies in between the cities of Palm Desert and La Quinta. As of the 2010 Census, the city population was 4,958.

Carlos Alcaraz has to win Indian Wells to unsurb Novak Djokovic as No 1 player, then has to defend Miami's 1000 points as well.

They're replaying last year's matches w/ Nadal! The final against Taylor about to begin after he defeated Alcaraz in the SF! Funny him taking off headband to shake out imaginary hair he doesn't have anymore! :face-with-hand-over-mouth: Poor thing will need to go to a few more treatments! It was thin even back then! :face-with-tears-of-joy::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth::astonished-face:

Ever since last year’s final and Nadal’s injury causing him to lose and this year him having to withdraw, the IW tournament has been a meaningless exhibition. :negative:

That's weird, considering that Rafa hasn't won IW since 2013.

@Moxie, I did my drawchallenge as promised ;)
Don,
If you are still around may I ask your picks, after my demolition in the AO, I was too scared to do the IW challenge :)
Many people are picking Medvedev, though from memory he hasnt played all that well at IW, I think maybe his game suits Miami better, I guess we shall see, he does have a good draw, he is on a roll on HC presently

Le Monf playing his first match in 9 months vs. pornstache
Gael was very rusty which was to be expected, he said his goal was to play in Paris at the Olympics in 2024, he did say another injury which has kept him out of the tour in 9 months again, would mean retirement.Gael lost in SS 63 61

Just finished watching some highlights of the mens matches Thursday 9th, ( as again I was called into work)

Murray doing Murray things, I wish he would listen to his mum Judy and try to win in straight sets, defeated Etcheverry 67 (5) 61 64

My young rising star Ben Shelton, solid win over The Fog 64 61, his reward, he gets to play the defending champion Taylor Fritz, who I hope is feeling better after throwing up on court in his SF match against Paul in Acapulco.

Good to finally see Diego Schwartman finally win a match in straight sets 61 62 over Coria

Dominic Thiem who received a wild card, going out again in the 1st rd to Mannarino 46 64 76(5). Thiem is 1-7 so far this season
