So was I the only one who thought The Hateful Eight was masterpiece?

I was supposed to watch it on Friday with my brother in law but due to the length of the movie (3 hours+) we didn't have time... but on the immediate "To Watch" list, along with Revenant, and having read Margaret's post, maybe the "Big Short" as I generally like Bale movies.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as masterpiece, but I thought it was bloody good. (You'll forgive the pun.) Tarantino is a helluva great filmmaker. I already said what I thought (above,) but I'll add that the Ennio Morricone score was perfect, I loved the old-school "overture" and "intermission," and the actors were clearly having the time of their lives.

Finally saw The Revenant tonight. It is very beautiful and brutal. It’s very good, though it’s hard to say I was always “enjoying” watching it. You’re meant to experience the brutality of that life, and I, for one, did. I felt I could smell it, and believe me a lot of it did not smell good. It was certainly going for a “mythic Old West.” At the very least, it found “good yarn,” even in the absence of much plot. @Broken_shoelace, I’ll be interested to hear what you think, when you’ve see it, since you’re keen.

Moxie,my movie buddy Judy went and saw the Revenant,I told her she could go on her own as I dont think the story line would interest me.Judy adored the film and told me I should go.I know my husband wants to see the film,I am a bit intrigued after what Judy described the movie as Wow,because quite frankly I was shocked that she wanted to see the film in the first place.Okay I will take the plunge and go,when my husband returns from work in 2 weeks:)

Marg, the film is excellent, the special effects, the history, acting, everything but crude . Leo as well as always , he deserves the Oscar. I always like the movies of true events, this movie teach us how the human being can survive even from the worst times like this man did

In fairness, Margaret, it's not really a film directed towards a woman's sensibility, if I can say that. Which doesn't mean we can't appreciate it, since I did. We went 4 people to see it. I was the only woman. We were divided on opinion, and I was one of the two who most liked it. One of my friends said, if we're going to speak of "chick-flicks," we should also speak of "dick-flicks." Pretty funny way to put it, and not wrong, if you ask me. But, if the majority of filmmakers are going to still be men, and therefore so some of the most artful, we will be compelled, if we want to see some of the better cinematic art, to watch films that are not especially made for us, as women. So I say go head-on in, and appreciate the beauty and artistry, in spite of the brutality, as in the case of Revenant, and Hateful 8. But also, when you can, support real art films made by women.

Oh, and Broken, I see you had already put in your 2 cents on The Revenant, when I went back to see if anyone had mentioned The Martian. I did have a problem with the end shot. And, while it has a very different tone than the Ridley Scott film, I thought it could have done with a little less reverence.

I don't want to make everyone jealous but I bought an Hellraiser/The Prophesy 11 movie pack for 10$ at the grocery store the other day.

I love bad movies...

Bad movies rock but those aren't bad  Far from it. Try watching The Victim 2011 :laydownlaughing Poor Michael Biehn (Reese from the first Terminator) has been reduced to this crap.

Exactly. If anyone wants a Roman epic, watch the great TV show. Gladiator is poor in comparison, imho...

Speaking of Roman themed films, the original Spartacus by Stanley Kubrick from 1960 featuring Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier is a great film and the 4k remastered bluray looks way better than the original bluray release. Beautiful transfer.

Finally watched Django Unchained. I enjoyed it, and it's a while since I enjoyed a Quentin Tarantino flick. It fell between two stools at times, being on one hand quite powerful and serious about racism and slavery, but then on the other hand being comic book with violence, which wasn't as bad as I'd expected, but was the usual OTT splatter gore from Tarantino.

Can see why he got the Oscar for the screenplay, it's one of his best. Probably should have gotten the director award too. Cast was fairly excellent. Wouldn't mind a sequel to this one...

I will finally get to see the Revenant on Monday. It's finished in the cinemas, but the casino is showing it on the giant screen, so second chance luckly.

One I missed first time around, but saw last night was Southpaw. Really good movie - relates to boxing, but is more life story focused. Maybe it's probably more for blokes but my wife enjoyed it too. She's a big fan of Jake Gyllenhaal.

This evening's viewing is The Big Short.

The Hateful Eight is the next one I want to see ASAP.

Really enjoyed "Hail, Caesar!" I love the Coen Brothers. How did you like The Big Short, BB? I liked it a lot. Thanks for the tip on Southpaw. And I'm glad you get to see The Revenent on the big screen. It really wants to be seen that way. We're getting ready to watch the Oscars. Let's talk about that after the winners are in.

I didn't get chance to watch the Big Short, but I'll watch Tuesday or Wednesday instead. I'm seeing the Revenant tonight.
