The Internazionali BNL d'Italia is widely considered the second most prestigious clay event after Roland Garros and the Premier tournament's roll of champions includes all time greats such as Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters, Venus Williams and Serena Williams. Foro Italico in northern Rome, in 1935, where it has stayed for all but three years since. The tennis complex has 11 courts, including the 10,400-seater Centre Court.

Rome is the Eternal City. Full of dead rocks, but also incredibly modern and vibrant. Its new contemporary art museum speaks of its desire to embrace the 21st C. But you have to take in all the centuries when visiting Rome. It is ancient, it is Renaissance, it's Baroque, and it is very mid-20th C., and moving into the 21st. A seasoned traveler might stay in Trastevere, or in the area of Piazza di Spagna for the up-market shopping. Via Condotti is the Rodeo Drive of Italy. Rome is a very layered, complicated, and romantic city. You should let it wash over you. It won't bite your hand off.

Tough draw for Sharapova. McHale, Safarova/Lucic-Baroni and then probably Kerber.

Lucic I would consider a tough opponent and would likely be the only one in the first 3 rounds that could give her trouble. McHale is not consistent enough and Kerbie returns to #1. Kerbie doesn't play well when she's the fave as evidenced by her falling completely off the wagon since USO.

She would be at the mercy of the organizers. RG would not give her entry into MD, but will give her WC into quals.

As I understood them to say on TC today, that RG denied her a wildcard even into quallies. They did say, though, that her ranking will be high enough to play in the qualifiers for Wimbledon. But maybe I heard wrong.

You got it right, Moxie. Sharapova won't play FO this year.

She qualified to play Wimby quals based on points. I seriously doubt she will get a WC into main draw. FO's decision, the courageous and correct one, will set the tone for Wimby. I assume she will be ranked high enough at USO that this will be a non issue.
