The Tournament:

A French national tournament has been held since 1891. For some time it was open only to French citizens, or members of French clubs. In 1925, it was opened to international amateurs, and in 1968 it was the first Grand Slam event to go "open," allowing amateurs and professionals to compete. It has always been played on clay. In recent years there has been great controversy over plans to either expand the current facilities, or relocate the event. Relocation seems to be off the cards, but the expansion plans are still being debated and fought in the courts.

The Players: Defending champ Mugu is nursing a neck injury, and hasn't been convincing since her win here last year. Serena is on maternity leave, and with Vika not yet back from hers, the field seems wide open with possibilities.

About City

Paris is the chicest of cities. No city is more casually or aggressively fashionable. But put on your scarf and gird yourself for an argument, because no place likes to talk philosophy, film, wine like Paris. It's both intimidating and invigorating.

Man, is this year going to be wide open or what? I just saw Halep listed on another site as the favorite...

This could have been the year Halep won were it not for her ankle. Terrible luck. She should use ankle braces.

There isn't a favorite. No Serena or Pova. Everybody else who had a good chance is either injured or out of form. This would have been a dud if Petra didn't play. I'll be watching her and probably not much of other players.

I had a terrible time filling out my draw challenge. A lot of just guessing. This is a great opportunity for someone and it'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.

At the risk of giving you all a crib sheet for your draw challenges, Jon Wertheim breaks down the seeds.

I thought Woz is injured. I would be happy to see her win a major. Most likely, it won't be in clay but wishing her luck nonetheless.

She's got as much of a chance as anyone, it seems. How's her ankle?

Ankle is ok it was a back problem in Strasbourg. And according to BREAKING NEWS from Sascha Bajin "she loves clay" never thought I should hear that. ;) Hope she brings sunshine to RG.

Petra looks really good. She's the first player through to round 2. Has lost her bulge in the middle and looks trim and fit. She was emotional (expected) after the win and I hope she goes far in this tournament without a clear fave.

Baczinsky also moves into R2 in straight sets. Next up on Chatrier, Kerber vs. Maka. How will Angie look?

Kerber in trouble but breaks finally in second set. Makarova has, in the past, badly broke down after leading a top player like she is today. But, she has taken a few scalps. I'm making coffee and getting ready for day one! Glad to see Petra won, as well as Puig. Like both of them.
