  • WTA: Week No. 1

    WTA: Week No. 1

Maria Sharapova Venus Williams Simona Halep

The 2015 tennis season started with multiple events in different cities. Brisbane, Auckland, and Perth in Australia, plus Shenzhen in China were all hosting events. All this serving as warm-up to the first Grand Slam of 2015 in Melbourne, Australia.

The first title of the season went to one of the oldest players on tour. Venus Williams scored her 46th career title in Auckland in a drama-filled three-set encounter against Caroline Wozniacki. The two former world No. 1’s delighted a packed crowd on a bright, windy, sunny afternoon for close to two hours. The final score was 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in favor of Venus.

Ana Ivanovic was in the same position as Venus, but she was competing in Brisbane, the only Premier-level event of the week, though Ana was the second seed and across the net was the top seed again. Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic delivered and made the final in a dream match-up. Both former No. 1’s fought for 2 and 1/2 hours before Maria finished first in the three-set match. The first set alone took over an hour. Final score:  6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3.

With Li Na’s retirement, Shenzhen was left without a defending champion in its third year of existance but WTA delivered two Top 10 stars in the form of Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova. In the end, the two stars delivered. Simona Halep won her first title of 2015, and her ninth overall in a little over an hour via straight sets; Petra Kvitova lost the semifinals to eventual runner-up Timea Bacsinszky.

  • Radwanska Rocks Rogers Cup Final in Montreal

Radwanska Rocks Rogers Cup Final in Montreal

    Agnieszka Radwanska

Agnieszka Radwanska, of Poland, won her first title of the year, defeating Venus Williams 6-4, 6-2. It is the 14th career title for the World No. 5.

Radwanska troubled a tired-looking Venus, who didn’t seem to know how to handle the tricky Pole’s game. Aga broke her in the third game of the first set, which was all she needed to take it. In the second, she broke Williams in the first game. Then breaks were traded, and Williams looked deflated after the second break of her serve.

Venus, 34, had spent a lot of time on court over the last two weeks, including the Bank of the West last week, and an emotional three-set victory over her sister, Serena, in the semifinals yesterday. However, it was one of her best runs in some time, and she will be back in the Top 20 when the rankings come out tomorrow.

  • Venus Still Formidable in Dubai

    Venus Still Formidable in Dubai

    Venus Williams

Venus Williams won her 45th title today, defeating  France’s Alize Cornet, 6-3, 6-0, in the Dubai Open. Williams, 33 years old, hadn’t won a title in 16 months. Her recent battles with illness, and her age, have put her career in question. However, the seven-time Grand Slam Champion and former world No. 1 put all of her skills on display today. The French woman, Cornet, who was the vanquisher of Venus’s sister yesterday, had little answer to the big serving American, who was having a very strong day.

Cornet scored the upset and was the surprise finalist over world No. 1 Serena Williams. As Venus said, “I was expecting to be playing Serena, but Alize played an amazing game in the semis, so congratulations on that.”

Venus staved off retirement questions for another tournament, and proved she still has more than a little game.

Ana Ivanovic Secures WTA Auckland Title

    Ana Ivanovic

Former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic continued with her excellent run of form by defeating Venus Williams 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in a titanic battle to seize the WTA Auckland crown in 2 hours, 19 minutes.

Williams, also a former world No. 1, fought back strongly after Ivanovic had raced to an early lead by taking the opening stanza 6-2. The 33-year-old American won the second set to level proceedings having fought back from 3-5 down and facing a championship point.  She held serve and then broke the Serb twice to send the match into a deciding set.

In the decider, Ivanovic broke Williams early and stayed in control, despite having to survive two break points when serving for the match.

It was Ivanovic’s 12th title and first since 2011.
