Rematch: Williams – Azarenka Prevail in Semifinals

There were a lot of nerves on display in today’s women’s semifinals…and Serena Williams played, too.

Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams got through their semifinal matches today to set up the anticipated (and generally hoped-for) final, a rematch of last year’s, in which Williams prevailed.

Azarenka played the Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta, who is coming back from a serious wrist injury and reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal.  It was a nervy affair, featuring 13 breaks of serve in 18 games.  It started with 5 service breaks at a trot until Azarenka finally held.  Pennetta tried to hang with the Belorussian, staving off 5 set points in the first set before Azarenka closed it out, but overall Azarenka’s powerful game was too much for Pennetta.  Azarenka prevailed in the end, 6-4, 6-2.

Williams beat Li Na of China, who battled both her nerves and a confident Serena, who is currently on a 24-match winning streak. It wasn’t until the second set that Li Na even won a game.  A letdown from Williams helped Li break for 2-1 in the second, to get her first lead in the match, and her legs back under her.  After that, she played more like the player that reached the semifinals, but Serena recovered and broke back in the next game.  Serving at 2-5, Li played an astonishingly gutsy game, saving 6 match points before finally holding for 3-5 in a nearly 14-minute game.  She then managed to get it to 30-all on Serena’s serve before the American closed it out on her 7th match point.  Williams won 6-0, 6-2 and has yet to drop a set in the tournament.

Later Friday evening, Serena and Venus Williams lost in the doubles semifinals to the Czech Republic team of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.

Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium pulled off the latest upset at Wimbledon.  And, at this point, why not?  A year ago, Flipkens was ranked 262, due to injury lay-offs.  She’s back at #20, but she withstood the #8 ranked, (7-inches taller and favored) Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Sloane Stephens, the 20-year-old US hopeful, lost to Marion Bartoli of France, 6-4, 7-5.  Stephens made a match of it, but Bartoli is seasoned and crafty.  A controversial moment came when the Frenchwomen insisted on stopping play at 4-5, deuce, on the American’s serve, citing the rain and condition of the court.  When play resumed, she won the next two points, and the set.  Ultimately, Bartoli prevailed in the second, keeping her on track for her second Wimbledon final. (She lost to Venus Williams in 2007.)

Sabine Lisicki, who yesterday bumped Serena Williams from The Championships, got through her match v. Kaia Kanepi in impressive fashion, 6-3, 6-3.

In another tightly contested match, Li Na was down a set and a break to Agnieszka Radwanska in the second, but fought back to take the second, though it was all Radwanska in the third:  7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2.

  • The Queen of Stuttgart

    The Queen of Stuttgart

Maria Sharapova claimed her second consecutive Stuttgart crown in defeating China’s Li Na at the Porsche Open.

The World Number 2 won in straight sets 6-4 6-3. It was the only match of the tournament where she hadn’t been stretched to a deciding final set.

Sharapova exerted a lot of pressure on the Li Na service game, with quality agressive returning. This paid dividends as she broke Li twice in the first set. She was broken back once, but it was a temporary repreive for Li and the russian closed out the set.

Sharapova serving well and returning even better, wrapped things up in a comfortable second set with Li Na double faulting on match point.

“I thought it’d be the toughest match of the tournament, but I played my best tennis today,” Sharapova said. “I was able to step it up.”

The second-seeded Li had a double-fault on match point

Sharapova now improves to 9-5 over Li in their personal head to head matchup and is confidently building momentum during the European clay court swing, where the main focus will be to defend her Roland Garros title in Paris.
