The Bryan Brothers Reign Again in London

Bryan Brothers Mike Bryan Bob Bryan

Bob and Mike Bryan beat Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo in the final of the Barclays ATP World Tour finals, 6-7(5), 6-2, 10-7.

In the first set, both teams were able to hold serve easily, barely losing a point on serve. In the tiebreak, Dodig/Melo managed to pull out a mini-break lead, and clenched the set when Mike Bryan returned a serve wide.

At 1-2 in the second set, Melo quickly got down 15-40. They managed to save the first break point, but lost the game on a double fault.

Serving to stay in the set, Melo again went down double break point, and this time Bob Bryan grabbed the set with a backhand volley.

The super-tiebreak opened with a flurry of mini-breaks. Eventually the Bryans pulled out a 9-7 lead, and on championship point, Melo sent a lob long.

This was the Bryan brothers’ fourth time winning the prestigious year-end championship. They had previously won in 2003, 2004, and 2009.

US Open Day 14: Women’s Final – Order of Play & Scores

    2014 US Open F Women

Day 14 is upon us, and so the women’s final, featuring the current #1 versus past #1, rivals and very close friends, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki.  The Dane is hoping to win her first career Major title, while Serena will be hoping to finally get her 18th, which has been alluding her since she won her 17th in New York last year.

The appetizer will be the men’s doubles final.  The #1 ranked team, the Bryan brothers, will be seeking to win their 100th title together.  (You read that right.)  They face Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez of Spain, who beat the Bryans at this year’s French Open.

The full schedule for Day 14 is listed below (Results to follow).  All times are local.

  • Djokovic Tops Nadal in London to Win Year-End Title

Djokovic Tops Nadal in London to Win Year-End Title

    WTF Winner - Djokovic 2

Novak Djokovic, who has rediscovered his drive and motivation since losing his world No. 1 ranking seven weeks ago, exacted revenge again today against the man who took it from him by beating Rafael Nadal convincingly, 6-3, 6-4, to take the ATP World Tour Finals title.  This was Djokovic’s third title at the year-end tournament, and Nadal’s second loss in a final, having never taken this trophy.

The Serbian came out strong from the start, while the Spaniard started looking nervous, and was broken in his opening service game.  Nadal got the break back, but was committing too many unforced errors on his trusty forehand side, and too many double-faults, trying for a bit too much to combat, futilely, in the end, the Djokovic A-game.

Djokovic, looking nimble and assured throughout, broke again early in the second set.  Nadal kept his nerve, fending off championship points in each of the last two games.  He held serve despite having been down, and got Djokovic to deuce at the last, but couldn’t hold off the inevitable any longer.  Djokovic served an ace, and then a Nadal shot sailed wide to end the match.

The win evens their head-to-head this year to two wins a piece, and closes the gap on the overall to 22-17.  It also sends a big salvo across the bow at Nadal for the season to come.  Djokovic is gunning for him again.

Fernando Verdasco and David Marrero beat Mike and Bob Bryan for the doubles title:  7-5, 6-7(3), 10-7.  They were the surprise Spanish duo to pull it off, passing the higher-ranked Spanish team of Granollers/Lopez, who beat the Bryans at this tournament last year.

  • Bryan Brothers Making (and Chasing) History Win Wimbledon 2013

Bryan Brothers Making (and Chasing) History Win Wimbledon 2013

Mike and Bob Bryan became the first professional doubles team to hold all four Grand Slam titles simultaneously, beating Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.  This is their third Wimbledon win, and 35th Major trophy.  In addition to holding all the Majors, the Bryan’s won the Olympic Gold here in London last year.  The last time any player or team held all those titles at once was Steffi Graf in 1988.  Graf won the actual Grand Slam, the calendar Slam, that year, which the Bryan’s can do, if they win the US Open this year.

    Chest-bump, Bob and Mike!
