Angelique Kerber Claims First Wimbledon Title

Angelique Kerber claimed her first Wimbledon title and third major with an almost flawless performance against Serena Williams.

The 30 year old German won the encounter in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 and rarely looked pressured on the way to victory. She made only 5 unforced errors in the entire match.

Williams, who defeated Kerber in the 2016 final had only given birth to her daughter 10 and half months ago and this match was just her fourth tournament since returning to the tour. Her finals appearance validated the decision of the Wimbledon committee who seeded her for the tournament.

Kerber was the first German to win Wimbledon since Steffi Graf took the title in 1996 and only a French Open title leaves her short of a career Grand Slam.

    Serena Williams

After some very mysterious behavior at Wimbledon, Serena Williams, determined to prove that was the result of just an anomalous illness, bypassed all critics and put in a dominating performance at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, CA, a tournament she has won three times. Today, she beat Angelique Kerber, of Germany, 7-6 (1), 6-3.

Williams, who captured Stanford titles in 2011-12, improved her unbeaten run at the tournament to 13-0 three weeks before she is set to defend her title at the U.S. Open, which begins August 25.

Williams was down 1-5  in the first – saving two set points at 2-5 – before seizing control of the match and closing out Kerber in 1 hour and 19 minutes.

“Serena had the better answer at the end,” said third-seeded Kerber.

    Simona Halep

Simona Halep, the 22-year-old Romanian who made a splash last year by winning six titles on the WTA Tour, has won her biggest one yet at the Qatar Open, beating Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the final, 6-2, 6-3.

For the first time, Halep beat 3 Top 10 players on her way to the trophy, including Kerber (No. 9), having already dispatched Sara Errani (No. 7), and Agnieszka Radwanska (No. 4.)

Despite four break point opportunities, Kerber was unable to break Halep in the match.

“It’s tough to play against a player like Simona,” Kerber said. “I was trying to play my game plan, but it was not easy … she hit the balls very well and on the line.”

“I just want to be focused for every point, to fight for every point,” Halep said.  She will rise to a career-high No. 9 when the rankings come out on Monday.

Petra Kvitova Wins the Pan Pacific Open

Czech star Petra Kvitova defeated Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 to secure the Pan Pacific Open title in Japan.

The former Wimbledon champion earned it the hard way. It was a roller-coaster ride of a match that featured several momentum swings before Kvitova sealed the contest with a rapier-like crosscourt forehand winner.

Kvitova dropped six straight games en route to a second set bagel before recovering her poise and going on to win the deciding set.

“Angie came back at me but I tried to stay focused and it’s amazing to win such a big tournament,” stated the champion after the match.

It was Kvitova’s first title success since Dubai in February.
