I think you have somewhat wrong opinion of me, I don't text that often at all, sometimes with my sister, a couple of my friends and sometimes if I can't watch Nole play and I need to know the score.

This was fun, thanks.Big Smile

I remember Cosmo talking about doing similar things if Federer was playing while she was at work. It's completely understandable, I think. Anyone who gets into this stuff enough to be spending time on a message board is going to be curious about live scores, etc.

As for the cell phone habits, I can't stand them. Drives me crazy when people text or make calls during a meal, in a restaurant, and -- the worst of all -- while driving.

However, I also think this is a reflection of my age and generation. In general, younger people seem to find this kind of thing normal, acceptable behavior.

If it were up to me, though, I would suggest finding a way to disable cell phones when driving. Too dangerous. Too many accidents.

Tented, not only is it dangerous (and I don't do it), but it is forbidden in Canada to talk on the phone or text while driving.

If your hate could be turned into electricity, it would light up the whole world. NT

Kieran, that was a hilarious break-down of the photo! And I'm pleased that we start with "manners," which is also a way to get into a new board. It's all about civilized interaction. That's why we have manners, and I'm in favor of them.

Obviously, we got straight to cel-phones and PDAs. If you're with friends, you should respect them, and concentrate on them. Looking away at your device during conversation implies that you're not fully engaged. That, to me, is not a good friend. What's the difference if you were talking to someone and reading the paper at the same time? If you are in extremis with work, you advise ahead that you might have to deal with it, and you excuse yourself, and do that work away from a table, or the presence of your friend. And if you MUST check a tennis score, I say you have to do it in the powder room. Smile

Well done, Canada! They should do that in the US, but it will never happen.

It's state-by-state here, but some laws are quite strict. I totally had to charm my way out of a ticket just for checking a VM when going through a tollbooth during slow-moving traffic in NY.

I'm pretty sure the US will at least go hands-free in most states in the next few years. Imperfect, but a start.

I am in my 20s. Manners are manners, but you are probably right in general about my generation.

Thank you General Clay Death. Not very original I know. You are also welcome to establish a military outpost in these parts.

In Ireland it's illegal to hold your mobile while you're driving. Has to be hands-free. I think the penalty is points on the license and a fine...

Do you have any idea what the percentage is of Dubliners who own a car?

I'm curious as to how it compares to the US. In our two largest cities, New York and Los Angeles, it's an interesting study in contrasts. In Manhattan, as Moxie can confirm, the percentage is quite low, since most people take some form of public transportation. In LA, however, it's the reverse.

A lot of people in Dublin have two cars. It's toned down a lot since the Celtic Tiger dropped a calf, but there's a humongous amount of cars on the streets, given how small the city is...

I wish people obeyed the law though...Every day I see people on their cells. Drives me nuts...I myself cannot do it because I am the last guy on earth that does not own a cell phone....

Speaking of, I am glad Disney bought the rights to the franchise from Lucas. He had great ideas but he could not write dialogue to save his life, or come up with coherent plots. I think Disney will improve the franchise.

Well, they certainly can't make the dialogue worse. But keep in mind that Hollywood creates (on purpose) action and sci-fi movies with minimal dialogue. That way they can market them more easily to non-English speaking audiences. Ironically, in a way, they've created a new kind of silent film. Confused

The star wars franchise can't go downhill (I hope). I preserve a seperate quadraint for the original star wars and try to keep them mentally separated from the new ones, which are enjoyable blockbusters in their own right, but don't achieve the greatness of the originals. Maybe Disney can restore it.

Agreed. I think the franchise will get a shot in the arm from Disney. I thought Lucas lost the plot in the Return of the Jedi. The ewok thing was plain silly. Of the prequels, I thought the third one was ok but the other two were garbage. He made the mistake of thinking special effects outweighs the plot and dialogue.

I thought this was quite funny:
