RE: US Open Women's draw
Seems like a pretty straightforward draw for Serena a few tests perhaps should they pan out. Nobody really worries me on that side that Serena might have to serve very well against, so she can hold out for the later stages if needed. Azarenka has the easier side minus perhaps a show down with perhaps Stosur or Kvitova. I am kind of hoping for a Stosur rematch. I loved their match against each other last year.

If you have notice when they write articles and talking about that mishap and the Sam stuff they never mention how Serena was cheated in '04 that is always left out of the talking points.

Well, she has Sloane and Jie, who always gives a match, in her quarter. So, her quarter isn't as straight forward.

I am looking forward to Serena beating Sloane in front of her family....

First thing I noticed is Serena has to play Franny again, then I noticed Venus is in the same quarter.

Petra and Vika are in the same quarter, that quarter includes Julia and Ana.
All are heavy hitters.

Hopefully we get the rematch of Sloane and Serena. Franny played Serena hard for 3 games but Serena came through rather easily, especially in the second set. I think Vika has the harder draw and I would love to see how Sammy plays her in a grand slam once again. They always seem to have exciting matches.

RE: US Open Women's draw
Looking at the draw, I count:
3 Slam Champs in the first quarter(Serena, Venus and Franny), two of them also current(Serena) or former(Venus) #1.
1 Slam Champ in the 2nd quarter(Li Na), Also a former #1(Jelena Jankovic).
1 Slam Champ in the 3rd quarter(Svetlana), also a former #1(Caro Wozniacki).
4 Slam Champs in 4th quarter(Ana, Vika, Petra and Sam), two of them former #1(Vika and Ana).

I have to pick the the 4th quarter as the toughest.

A sneaky peak on the actual points standings with last years US Open stripped:

1 Serena Williams 10260
2 Victoria Azarenka 8105
3 Maria Sharapova 7866
4 Agnieszka Radwanska 6055
5 Na Li 4665
6 Sara Errani 4225
7 Marion Bartoli 3746
8 Caroline Wozniacki 3485
9 Angelique Kerber 3140
10 Petra Kvitova 3010*

* if she wins New Haven she'll be #9 with 3160 and replace Kerber.
Lots of possibillities for Caroline in this and that must inspire her to an extra effortSmile Like overtaking Marions 7th spot and Errani is not so far away either.

Wozniacki defends a lot of points after US Open though. 1370 to be precise. Whereas Errani has only 600 to defend. Wozniacki probably needs QF's minimum at US Open in order to keep that sort of ranking up at the end of the season.

Caroline still favorite among the Yale football team - just got this:

Lot of points to defend but it's not crucial because other players are not that far ahead - see racelist - a quarter final will bring her about top 10 on the race list and with Bartoli out she will be one of the substitute players. She's not defending Seoul and Moscau, but playing Tokyo, Beijing and Luxembourg. Seems a little strange to many but actually not that crucial.Smile

Just being one of the substitute players is hardly very satisfactory for a player who ended the year world number 1 2 years in a row 2 years ago. It will just be another year of stagnation if she does that. It's crucial for Caro to at least qualify for Istanbul to show she is still part of the game's elite.

I finally got a chance to watch Townsend play. Such a talent! I hope to see her breakthrough on the pro tour. Despite her loss in the third round of quals, is there a chance she can play the main draw as lucky loser?

Getting lucky is a longshot. I'm not sure about the wildcard rules, but why didn't she get one from the USO?
