Maria Sharapova considered changing her name to Maria Sugarpova for the US Open
Maria Sharapova, the richest female athlete in the world, is planning the most audacious move of her career — changing her surname to Sugarpova for the two-week duration of the US Open, in honour of her line of sweets.

The 26-year-old Russian, a former world No 1, has asked about a “quickie” name-change through the Supreme Court of Florida, where she has a base, and would revert to Sharapova after the tournament. It is understood also that the striking emblem of Sugarpova candy, a pair of red lips will feature somewhere on her attire during the final grand slam of the year.

It is an extraordinary ruse by Sharapova and IMG, her management company, and there are no legal barriers to stop her. Sources close to the star, who split last week from her new coach, Jimmy Connors, in Cincinnati after only a single match together, say that she is willing to see whether the change can be made in time.

Sugarpova, the company, is owned by the athlete, who founded it with an estimated $500,000 of her own money. The sweets come in 15 varieties that have labels like “flirty”, “sassy” and “smitten”. It has been called “the Spice Girls of the candy world” and it is estimated that 1.8 million bags of the confection, which cost $5 a packet, were sold worldwide last year, with special emphasis on Russia, the United States and Europe. There are outlets in Selfridges stores in London, Manchester and Birmingham.

Should she be able to go through the necessary paperwork, it is understood that she may still need the permission of the grand slam committee. If it agrees, she could be introduced, addressed and have scores called out in favour of Miss Sugarpova for as long as the No 3 seed remains in the event.

The plan comes hard on the heels of the recent announcement that Sharapova, who won her breakthrough grand slam at Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 2004, has for the ninth year in succession been named as the worldâ€s highest-paid female athlete. On top of her $6 million in earnings, her first victory at the French Open last year brought bonuses in her endorsement deals that topped out at $23 million. That put her almost $8 million ahead of the world No 1, Serena Williams.

There is a celebration tonight on Fifth Avenue, New York, of the first anniversary of the Sugarpova brand. She will unveil an accessory collection. There was no comment from IMG, but it is likely that an announcement confirming Sharapovaâ€s move could be made at the event. Max Eisenbud, Sharapovaâ€s manager, has added Britainâ€s No 1, Laura Robson, to his stable.

Maybe she should dress up in a clown's outfit and randomly throw sweets to the crowd.

What a 2 week Money Grabber I hope her request gets a huge No No
If I was Maria I would be concentrating on my tennis for the USO.She has points to defend after
making the s.finals last year.

The first sentence is wrong. Maria is not the richest.

She makes the most per year since 2005. But Serena

was getting big endorsements years before that and

if she wins the USO will be over $ 50 mil in prize money

Almost double Maria's. Maria is playing catch up

why is the media always counting pova s money and comparing her to Serena s money...as if thats the greatest achievement and trying to diminish Serena s achievements.Money is not everything...Williams is very rich and will be rich beyond this lifetime. We never hear the media talking about what Roger or Rafa earns, its the agent who is trying hard to render Williams achievements meaningless.Thats why no one respects women tennis or show up to watch the matches because of this sillyness....until the tour goes back to be about tennis, the empty courts will continue..
I hope pova l loses early and take her sourpovas with her...

Reminds me of the song, Sugar in the morning Sugar in the evening Sugar at suppertime, by the Andrew Sisters, if there is anyone as old as me!! What an over the top absurd headcase she is. Should be Sourpova fortnight in New York.

I am wondering if her commitment to her "brand" contributed to her most recent break-up with a coach? Maria is a good tennis player and is still young. She should be concentrating on her tennis and let her management team handle the gimmicks involved in selling candy. If the USTA allows her to do this and she gets knocked out early she could be the butt of many late night jokes.

I didn't see Serena's name mentioned in the article. How you interpret the article as "rendering Serena's accomplishments meaningless" is quite bizarre.

8 million ahead of Serena the no.1....its like rubbing it in Serena s face that even though you are no.1 she earns more ...so what ..its not like Serena is starving she has been a millionaire since she was 15yrs and 17yrs of making millions is no joke.

Fair enough, I missed that bit. Although I think the slant of the story is to highlight Maria's greed and doesn't really have much to do with Serena.

I first thought this is an April fool but it's August now.

A sad example of commercialism and I will like Sharapova even less if this happens.

WTA should now make a rule banning candy advertising as they are unhealthy. That would ban Sharapova from playing at the USO.
