Sloane Stephens....Its Mental
Sloane Stephens tells The Wall Street Journal that her inability to do well at non-Grand Slam tournaments is entirely mental.

Her blueprint: pushing to overcome her flaws. With her coach David Nainkin, she is doing strength training aimed at producing an injury-proof core (she has been bothered by an abdominal muscle tear). She is focusing on serving harder and improving her footwork. She says her main goal is improving her mental toughness and concentration.

“The media has dubbed me as someone who can only get up for the big tournaments, and that is not who I want to be,” she said in an email this week. “I want to be a contender at every single tournament all year, and most of that is mental for me.”

She has the skill, but it's her demeanor on court that really bugs me. It looks like she couldn't care less ... non of the top women looks that freakin bored playing.

but it's her demeanor on court that really bugs me. It looks like she couldn't care less ... non of the top women looks that freakin bored playing. especially when she plays against the top women or major events like the Fed cup. Also, what great champion would admit that they aren't mentally focused at all times. Who does that

I understand hating her. I hated Martina Hingis with a passion. But to say a young woman who is barely in her 20s who is ranked 10th for this year isn't "important" is kind of a joke. I love Venus and Serena but let's be honest, people used to use this same kind of personality assassination against them in their youth.

Right but that has nothing to do with her game. She's had great results so far. I just get frustrated when people equate someone's personality faults with their abilities on court.

she is a pusher and pushers dont last very long on tour...they defend defend defend and run all day long...examples are Wozniacki,Jankovic and Kerber who ran a lot last year and is showing signs of burnout.

If Sloane is a pusher, she is a bad pusher all due respect meaning she pushes for the backhand side but with her forehand she really cranks the ball.. I don't know if I would classify Sloane as a pusher but I am not always correct.Angel

RE: Sloane Stephens....Its Mental
MASON, Ohio — Sloane Stephens made no secret of enjoying the relative anonymity of playing overseas during the last three months. Now back in America preparing for the U.S. Open, the 20-year-old says sheâ€s had to quickly adjust to the well-meaning but aggressive fans who are in constant pursuit of photos, autographs or any opportunity to be close to the 17th-ranked Stephens.

After reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open, the fourth round of the French Open and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon this year — and making headlines for critical comments about Serena Williams — Stephens†profile is at an all-time high.

“[I]tâ€s way more intense than last year,” Stephens said after beating Petra Martic on Monday to set up a second-round match against Maria Sharapova at the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday night. “Last year, it was, ‘Oh, my God, I love you. Me and my mom watched you on TV.†Now, itâ€s parents pushing their kids, like, ‘Go.†The other day this girl was on crutches, and the mom was like, ‘Run!†I was like, ‘Are you serious?†Thatâ€s how crazy it is. It was a lot more mellow and sweeter [last year]. Like, ‘Oh, Iâ€m your favorite player? Thatâ€s so cute.†Now, itâ€s like people are elbowing each other and itâ€s way more intense.”

When Stephens finished, she quickly packed up her bag and left the court without making eye contact with any of the kids or offering the “Sorry, guys, I have to get ready for my match” excuse that so many players use. As Stephens – who told ESPN The Magazine earlier this year that she was “devastated” when Serena and Venus Williams snubbed her autograph request as a 12-year-old — walked away, the kids looked confused and the parents shook their heads.

When asked whether things are different from how she thought theyâ€d be, Stephens said: “I mean, I never wanted to be popular. “Like, ‘Oh, I want people to want my autograph.†Itâ€s never been like that. I donâ€t mind signing autographs. Itâ€s fine. But when they just get out of hand, itâ€s too much.”

Stephens admitted that itâ€s hard for her to connect with fans now.

“Thereâ€s no interacting,” she said. “Itâ€s survival.”

I wonder if She ever thought that when she was 12 the Sisters thought

She was one of those annoying kids She is ducking now as just getting

out of hand and it was hard for them interacting they were just surviving

And how many of those kids who she didn't sign for will resent her like she

resented the Sisters?

Does She have the wherewithall to change her mind now

that the shoe is on the other foot?

Will she realize that the players can't sign for everyone in

the stadium no matter how special it may be for each one?

a lot of folk are hating Sloane since all that stuff with serena..

add that in with the perceived threat of Sloane becoming one of the wimmin who might move above serena as Williams moves into her mid 30s..it all means stephens get a load of aggro..

the reality is the is a bit clueless socially..another sign of this was the frankly embarrassing comment she made that she said some restaurant staff in france 'pretend' they cant speak English when she asks them.. Huh..erm learn a bit of French eh luv :

ive not seen an huge amount to comment on her tennis..if she shuts her gormless mouth and just plays tennis its prob a good idea. Idea

knowing me alan partridge, knowing you tennis frontier..ah ha.

What was that all you were saying? Not a factor?

Please. She's now beaten 2 of the last 3 number 1s in the same year.

Start actually commenting on people's game and not their personality.

The thing I have noticed about Sloane is that she can play down to her opponents level, but now I have seen her raise her level up and beyond the opponent's level. If she can keep one and forget the other...
She will only get better.
