The Players' Championship (golf)
Well, that was a thrilling finish yesterday over holes 16-18! Woods played steady and did not do anything foolish, whilst Sergio Garcia aimed at the pin on the famous 17th "island" hole and dumped two in the water. There was too much whining by Garcia Saturday after the third round too, but that has come to be expected of him, unfortunately. I think it was an important win for Tiger Woods and bodes well for him capturing a major later this year.

Tiger has won 4 events this year and looked to be in control of the Masters and may have indeed won it but for the bad luck he received on 15 during the third round. He is controlling his mid and short irons, especially the distance, and his putting from 10-20 feet has been spectacular. He seems to be getting back a bit of the old "aura" on the course and I think it is a matter of time before he bags another big one. Should be an interesting next few months on the PGA Tour.

Agreed, Garcia does have a rep as a whiner. 15 years ago as a freshfaced smiling teenager he was considered the future of golf. I guess he's frustrated at still being labelled the best player to have never won a major.

Woods looks like he's cranking it back up and should add to his tally sooner rather than later.

Thought I'd create a thread for any golf fans that want to discuss the tournament.

Who will win?
Rory, Tiger, Adam, Lefty or a newcomer?

RE: The British Open: 2013
I have played golf longer than tennis, so I am very excited the Open Championship has returned to Muirfield--one of the best links courses they ever play. I really have no feel for who will win this weekend, other than to say I don't believe Phil will lift the Claret Jug. He has had issues with the Open over the years.

Agree Shawn. Lefty has had issues in the UK. Too bad this tournament isn't in Georgia and giving away a green jacket. Then I'd say he was almost a shoe-in. Smile

Zach Johnson has laid down the gauntlet. He shoots a 66 on the first day and tops the leaderboard at -5. Let's see how the headliners do this afternoon.

A few familiar faces who always seem to enjoy Links golf - namely O'Meara, Lehman and Jiminez.

Not really following it until the last day. How's the Big Easy doing? (Els)

I don't know what happened, but if Woods pared 18, then he shot 72 (+1 for the day) and is at -1 for the tournament. Missing putts again is he. He will need a mid-sixties round tomorrow to have a chance.

Tiger shot 71 today is -2 for the tourney. Ernie is at +4 through 6 holes. He's got to knock a few in so as to avoid the cut. Right now the cut is +5 but that could change if the leader's get hot on the back 9. Rory is stinking the joint up. Posted a 79 yesterday and today he's +2 through 4 holes and will likely miss the cut.

So Mclroy doesn't make the cut? He's going to have to start to worry about being the "aging prodigy."

That was some putt by Westwood at 16 for bogey to stay tied w/ Tiger at -2. Catch the highlights if you can he's made 2 consecutive clutch putts at 15 and 16. Now we're heading for the last 2 holes to see who will be in the last pairing for tomorrow.

Lee is in the driver's seat but any player within five strokes is in the mix. Woods and Scott are two back and will be paired together. They will play in from of Mahon and Westwood. Should be a thrilling final round.

Tiger doesn't have to compete against Westwood or Scott but rather his deamons and the golf course.. If the course officials trimmed the grass and the course plays fast similar to Thursday and Friday, I like Tiger chances.. If the grass stays high, Tiger need to make the proper adjustments and fight his deamons to Leave the Damn Driver in the bag.Puzzled

I expect Westwood to fold to the pressure and someone else to step up to challenge for the jug..

It still something about Stevie Williams.. If I was Tiger.. I would invite him out for a beer and I would very "personally address" his phoniness.. but that's just me.. that's how I roll. Angel

Everyone has made the turn to the back 9. Westwood and Scott are tied at -1. There's a couple of players at E and +1. Tiger is so good at being terrible. He's at +2 and not looking like he has a run in him. I think E par could win this thing.

Lefty just went on a tear and has posted -3 as his final score. Westwood at E will need miraculous shots to catch him and it's not gonna happen. Phil, (the unlikeliest of the field when the day began) will probably win it going away.
