RE: Slasher's WTA Live Rankings Thread
I have a question for any WTA fan who can help me regarding the rule.

I noticed how the Top 10 Commitment Rule is used. A player ending the year within the Top 10 is committed for the next year and must play 4 GS, 4 PM, 4 P5 and 2 P700 tournaments. Seems fairly easy to maintain and implement, although more complicated than the ATP commitment rule, even if it's more clear.

How does the Top 20 2 P5-must count rule work? The Top 20 is the YE Top 20, or a player transitioning through it say, next week, already becomes part of this rule, and the next P5 she plays, she will have to count the best P5 out of her tournaments (if not already counted)?

Also, is the WTA Championships counted as the 17th tournament (separate from the Best 16) - like in ATP's WTF, or it will enter as one the 16 capped tournaments?

Noble (Nobel? ) effort Sir Slasher. Smile

WTA 2013 rule book

Check out sections 2 (2 H.2 in particular re WTA Championships) and especially section 14. WTA Ranking System. For top 20 P5 it looks like it is transitional, not YE.
Commitment rules seem quite complex and seems like there are many ways where they can be adjusted. Also they have the "Special Ranking" rules. But they do provide a contact in the Rankings section if you have questions.

Respectfully,
masterclass

RE: Slasher's WTA Live Rankings Thread
Actually, the rulebook (or those particular paragraphs you posted) does not answer either of my questions. I read them and I wouldn't have asked if it was crystal clear. It is not specifically said when the player has entered Top 20. It's pretty volatile, especially when say one player enters the Top 20 by playing a Premier-5 which will not count as a Best 16. But maybe, if she was YE Top 20, falling out and reentering are not a problem, since the rule would apply anyway.

Obviously, the rule about the WTA Championships is nowhere in the rulebook either.

I will of course apply logic. Top 20 Transitional and WTA Championships as one of the Best 16 (not the 17th) tournaments are the most logical solutions given information that is there (like for instance, the fact that a WTA Championships penalty is given as a Best 16 mandatory 0).Smile

Well, I have the algorithm laid out with these basic rules:

1. If a player has a 0-pointer, that is a penalty, and is mandatory to count (unlike ATP, where 0-pointers are not necessarily penalties).

2. Anything that is GS MD, PM MD or WTA Finals (Championships or Tournament of Champions) is mandatory if present in the breakdown.

3. Top 10 players also count the best 2 P5s out of their list

4. Top 20 players also count a number of P5s between 0 and 2 (depending on the number of P5s played between now and the time they entered Top 20). This number will be calculated by the automated part and for this algorithm will be written inside a cell.

5. All other players count anything from their GS+PM (Mandatory count) along with a set of tournaments to their Best 16 (exactly like ATP).

There are more complex rules that I will not touch yet:

1. Under-17 players will not have a Best-16 but a more limited number of tournaments they can count in the breakdown (for now, I will not implement this rule).

2. The Special Ranking rule is just like the ATP's Protected Ranking, and will not be part of this algorithm (it's for entry purposes only).

3. There is a maximum of 3 penalties rule that limits the breakdown of 0-pointers a player counts to her ranking. In other words, a 4th penalty will not be mandatory anymore. But that only if there is a Long Term Injury (does pregnancy count as that?).

That about closes this up for the week. I'll get cracking on Monday and see if I can get Serena's total right.Big Smile

All top 10 rules, top 20 rules etc. are using the top whatever from the end of last season.

While top 10 players must play all those events, the only must counts are the 4 grand slams, the 4 premier mandatories, and 2 premier 5s. However they are commitment events, so if they miss a premier 5 they committed to or P700, they get a forced 0 on their ranking.

Both the WTA Championships and the Tournament of Champions count in your best 16 results.

Both the WTA Championships and the Tournament of Champions count in addition to your best 16 results, thus effectively a 17th tournament.

should be called....

"the tournament of also-rans".
or "the tournament of shambles"
or "the tournament of frivolous pointlessness"
or "the bogus money box gathering"..
or "the tournament of nothing".
or "the festival of confused musings and dull goings-on"
or "the tournament of toss".
