1. If he loses to anyone other than a member of big four at Dubai, he probably won't win any significant title in 2017.

2. If he loses only to a member of big four at Dubai (independent of at what round the loss may happen), I will still hold hopes for a decent 2017.

3. If he wins Dubai, that would mean Fed has got his mojo back and will have very good chances at venues such as Halle, Wimbledon, Cincy & Basel and some reasonable chance at venues such as IW, USO and O2.

Are you saying if Fed doesn't make the semis at Dubai, he has a little hope at the grand slams including SW19 which are still over 6 months away ?

Not necessarily. In 2014 and 2015 he was miles better than the competition on faster courts like Cincy and Dubai. At both Wimbledon and US Open he choked like a dog, because he thought he needs to play tennis out of this world to win. Novak himself wasn't exactly playing the tennis of his life in any of those finals, but it just wasn't meant to be. He botched like 20 break points at USO. That's hideous.
If he can win Dubai without any fuss, that means he is back to his 2014/5 levels or close to it.
First I just want to see him healthy on court for a change, just like Nadal.

No, I don't care as to at what stage he loses; to whom he loses is more important to me.
This is because of his current lowly rankings.

Do we have fans willing to believe Roger can pull a Sampras? Pete had not only missed out in winning a major for 2 years (2000 Wimbledon), he hadn't won anything until '02 USO over his pigeon, Agassi! Sampras had dropped to #22 and seeded #17 at Flushing IIRC! Can history repeat itself at SW19 this coming season? Angel Idea Rolleyes

^ If anyone can it's a healthy Federer. Bad knee this year and still made the semis. I think quite a few people would have expected him to beat Murray if he was 100% healthy and made the final.

How come Federer won't be receiving a protected ranking from the ATP? I thought players who are out from injury for more than 6 months can get a protected ranking in order to enter or be seeded at tournaments?

It only works on ATP events not Grand Slams. The slams are run by ITF not ATP...so the protected rankings don't apply to the slams.

No, protected rankings apply to slams also. However, protected ranking can only buy you entry into tournaments and PR can never be used for seeding purposes in any tournament, be it GS or ATP tourney.

Except when Seles was allowed to return as a co-#1! It made sense because she won right away; winning another AO which was her 2nd major back after the stabbing IIRC! I seem to remember Graf missed it with either an injury or apathy! What do you think about this instance of a PR even though it encompassed 2 1/2 years? Martina suggested it over the objection of other top players! It affected their seedings dropping them behind Seles! No No Angel Dodgy Cover Rolleyes

Seles case was very unique. Seles should had been provided every exemption that was available to a tennis player.

RE: Federer's Schedule for 2017
Any idea why Roger decided not to play Brisbane this year? Is it just out of boredom of playing at the same venue every time or is it something else? Hopman Cup and Brisbane International are similar when to comes to usefulness of playing the tournament as a preparatory one for Oz Open. But, the competitiveness has to be lesser in this one being an exhibition tournament? What are you thoughts? We are talking about the preparations of the all vital Oz open.

RE: Federer's Schedule for 2017
This article addresses some of it:

http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-...2dab20987b

Basically, the article says his contract at Brisbane had run out and he was looking to go somewhere else, and liked the Hopman cup atmosphere.

Also, from a more realistic/possibly cynical view, he probably can't get the same $$ he was getting before from either Doha or Brisbane, so he is choosing to switch things up/using the Hopman cup as a negotiating tactic for next year.

From a tennis perspective, I've also seen it pointed out that at the Hopman cup he is guaranteed 3 men's singles matches win or lose, while at the other places he could be one and done with a loss. So getting guaranteed match play could also be a factor during his comeback period.

Fearhand made all the correct points. In addition, I just want to point out that Hopman cup is not an exhibition event. It is ITF event as opposed to ATP event.

Annoying Fact: Roger's losses in 2016 were bookended by losses to Raonic, the first one at Brisbane and the last one at Wimbledon.

Alright. My bad. That does mean the tennis is going to be serious. And that sounds great. My another question was, what about best-of-five-set matches?

RE: Federer's Schedule for 2017
Fed gave interview to NY times last Friday. Here is what he said about his schedule
in 2017.

"For the moment, it looks like the Hopman Cup, Australian Open, Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami. For the moment, the clay-court season, I’ve got no clue. Grass, it would be Stuttgart, Halle, Wimbledon and that kind of stuff, but let’s see what happens in the first two to five events, and then I’ll have more answers. I wish I could tell you I’m going to play 52 tournaments in a row, but let’s not go crazy here."

It looks like he is thinking of playing in Miami. He said nothing about Miami in his previous interview.
It looks like he may go MIA during the clay season.

I too would like him to skip Miami unless he plans to completely skip the clay season. Miami and IW are the only two masters events where you can skip one, yet get two weeks of rest.

I have the feel Roger doesn't need frequent breaks like we think he needs. He is hardy. He used to play this schedule in the past so I don't think it's a problem. Miami's court isn't his favourite but that's not an excuse. He is going to be there to rake in any points that he can. Let's hope for the best.
