2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES
Starts on August 5th, finishes on August 21st, and here's the official site, with the schedule of events. It's the biggest sporting event in the world. Apparently half the worlds population tuned in to watch the Olympic Games in London, at some point or another. It'll make headlines, create new global stars, be tainted by controversy, and give us a huge jamboree of spectacle and entertainment.

I have to say, I love watching the Olympics, particularly got a buzz watching Michael Phelps in the last two games, go from superstar, to Superman. And he's back again this year, to try extend his record of medals (22), and golds (18).

Usain Bolt, gymnastics, track and field, the marathon, all the staples of TV viewing, and opinionating, and household uproar and delight, for little over 2 weeks.

What are you looking forward to, yourself?

RE: 2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES
I like to watch opening ceremony and closing ceremony.

I like to watch gymnastics, diving, all "synchronized" events. I don't enjoy watching fencing and many other events.

However, I am disillusioned with so much doping going on there. As a result, I am going to cut down watching stuff this time.

Yeah, it's a tarnished event, unfortunately. Need to suspend so much disbelief to watch it. But I still enjoy the bogey events, like sprinting etc. Will be interested in the 100m gold, see if Bolt can win a third...

RE: 2016 RIO OLYMPIC GAMES
A kind of maniacal blanket denial has ripped through Russians, from Putin downwards, who prefer to spout incoherent conspiracy nonsense than address their own corruption and inability to realise that they've long ago become a backward, rogue state. Not just in athletics, but with regards to the Olympics, definitely in athletics, and other sports. The full extent of their banning from Rio won't become clear until their appeal it heard by CAS, but it makes for a fascinating character study to watch them struggle with their own faultlines. The whistleblowers have been bloody brave for telling the truth, but now the consequences for the country at this years Olympics is calamitous.

I'm beginning to think that it might take another Olympic games to be almost completely sacrificed through mass bannings in order to even start to make drug cheats feel unsafe in what they're doing...

US women's soccer team beats NewZealand 2-0 in the opening match. Is it legal to have events starting before the opening ceremony? Puzzled

Yuliya Efimova should not have been allowed to compete. She was caught doping twice which is enough to warrant a life ban. Instead she won silver in swimming. I suspect corruption at all levels that got her into the event. Justice needs to be served. Russians should be banned. No milder punishment will do.

Did anybody watch Trampoline? I have never watched it before (at least as an Olympic sport). It is amazing how high they jump and how many somersaults they do in the air. A Canadian girl Mcleenan won. Check out the final video.

I've mainly made time to watch the swimming because of the time difference between here and there. Phelps is extraordinary, and I was happy the drug cheat Russian didn't win, although as somebody pointed out, why is she getting special treatment when Justin Gatlin is still around? Hopefully he gets the same response from the fans and the media. Maybe there's a popular tide turning against the cheats now?

Ireland have won a silver in the rowing, and that'll open the floodgates. Popcorn

Here's a really funny video of a Canadian commentator who wasn't paying attention during Phelps 200m medley race... Lay Down Laughing

Schooling, the Singaporean guy who beat Phelps in the 100 m fly event was awarded ONE MILLION DOLLARS by Singapore Government as per their policy. Incidentally, this is the first time Singapore Govt had to actually pay out (as no one from that country has ever won a Gold Medal).

For comparison, US Govt. pays $25,000 prize for each GM winner.

Men's 200m final later tonight. No Gatlin! Bolt says he's gonna try run a sub-19 second race, but his fastest time this year is from the semifinal, 19.78, or something like that. There are men in the final who have run faster than him this season. The world record looks safe: 19:19...

Couldn't find much on the web, but wiki has a page about it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Summe...g_ceremony

On the Olympics ticket website, the times given are 17:15-23:00, but I'm not sure what that consists of:

https://ingressos.rio2016.com/rio2016.ht...ion=filter

Here's another article here, giving US TV details regarding the closing ceremony, and some intel about what's going to be in it:

http://www.vox.com/2016/8/19/12502888/cl...ive-stream

EDIT: by the way, the 2012 closing ceremony lasted 3 hours and 11 minutes, so I dunno how long this one will last, even though the Rio budget is a fraction of the GB budget for the same...

Gatlin would be the Villain of these games isn't wasn't for the absolute arrogant stupidity of Lochte which will be quickly be forgotten due to his celebrity.
