She will just serve her 2 year suspension and comeback just like Martina Hingis. The tennis world will forget about it and she will be the best thing ever just like Hingis. I say this with sarcasm.

First of all I am proud of the fact (perhaps after so much publicity about their inaction) that ITF is finally standing up to someone as big as Maria.

Maria has taken a preemptive move of announcing it before ITF announces it, thanks to her PR team on how to manage a crisis.

The excuse that it was recently banned and she does not know is not valid at all. She is a mutli-million dollar brand and this is her profession, she better know what is banned and what is not.

Incidentally, she was taking this drug for 10 years and all these 10 years she was losing badly to SW again and again. Now, the makers of this stupid drug might go out of business due to bad publicity Lolz

But, there is a big diff here. Martina took cocaine or some other thing for entertainment. It is not performance increasing drug, if anything it would be performance decreasing drug.

What Maria took clearly labelled as helping with endurance and stamina etc and so is a performance enhancing drug.

Sharapova fails drug test
Dominatrix announces that she made a huge mistake .

This deserves its own thread. I request the mods to move the messages from the gossip thread to here.

Incidentally, WADA had announced that it is adding this stuff to banned list in September itself
although the ban would be effective from Jan 1 2016. So, the excuse that the drug has a half life of 2 months and so it would be in her system even if she has taken it before Jan 1st is not valid. They announced early so that people can stop taking immediately and get it out of the system.

If she is banned for 6 months, she will be out of RG and Wimby.

If she is banned for 9 months Olympics and USO will also be gone.

If she is banned for 1 year, next year's AO will be gone too.

If she is banned for 2 years, her career would be gone. It would be tough to come back after that long a ban.

People really think she'll get 2 years for this? I hope so but something tells me this is gonna be a pathetic move by the ITF and she'll only be banned a few months. Wait and see I guess.

I think the athletes are not following closely what WADA announcements, but rather is the doctors who are working with them and I think they should inform the athletes ahead of time.
Maria is not the only one who got caught off guard by the banning of this medicine.
Another Russian athlete in a sport I am following closely, figure skater Ekaterina Bobrova, ice dancer, who finished 3rd at the European championships with her partner Dmitri Soloviev, also tested positive at the European championships, which took place at the end of January in Bratislava. Interestingly, this announcement broke this morning as well:

Apparently, there are few more athletes as well.

A low earning athlete can come up with such an excuse. But, Maria is a multi-million dollar brand. She can and should be having doctors and advisers who should be advising her properly. IMHO, it is not so much that they did not know the rule change, but perhaps thought they would not start testing for it immediately and/or let go of Maria as she is a superstar.

When someone is banned, can she participate in exhos? I am sure she would still draw well and make money.

She should only be allowed play other fella caught dopers Cool Of course she's playing dopers like herself every week it's just they don't test them properly and they get away with it. She was just dense taking a drug that takes 2 months to leave your system and should be ashamed at her stupidity.

I just saw repeat of news-conference! I guess she has been taking some kind of legal medication for the last 10 years, but made illegal on the tour this year! She failed a drug test at AO and takes full responsibility for her actions; hopes not to end her career like this and wants to come back from potential suspension! No No Cover Ras

Well don't be too naive - read about MELODONIUM and where it's originated from Latvia. You can see what's happened to the Russian athletes - they are banned from the Olympic Games because of systematic drug use and many times different drugs combined. Melodonium in 2005 a report demonstrated that the combined treatment of meldonium and lisinopril may improve the quality of life and exercise capacity. People around Sharapova has known this and acted from this IMHONo No

What she was prescribed was on the watch list for most of 2015, although it was not formally banned until this year.

If the governing body does not apply the one year ban, it is setting a bad precedent.

Setting a one year ban would be bad. It should be 2 years. The drug she was taking for 10 years has a 2 month half life so she must be one hell of an idiot 'cos taking it 2 months prior and still having it in your system when tested is as dense as it gets.

Also, while it's obvious there are tons of dopers out there, they sadly remain innocent until proven guilty but it's pretty unfair that her opponents who lost to her at the AO lost to a doper. Not saying they of course weren't also doping but I'd certainly feel p1$$ed losing to a doper if I myself was clean. Again, not saying those she beat were clean but in the absence of positive tests they were.
