Will Maria reach 10 Slams? More?
This question may not be as valid as the other one but Maria is only 26 years old this year, so she could have another 3 years of playing left in her.

Currently she has 4 slams, IMHO she needs at least 10 to be considered among the elite. Although having the career grand Slam does help her argument.

I like Maria, but I don't see her winning another 6 slams -- unless Serena retires very soon.

Great polls, Kiu! Thanks for beginning them, and it's great to see you on Tennis Frontier!

I doubt it. She will probably retire after the Olympics. The chance of her winning 6 of the possible 16 is slim. Another one or two is feasible if she does not meet Serena or Vika.

I think she could win another two, maybe even three slams. For her to end up with a total of ten seems a bit unlikely though.

I agree. Even when she plays her best, there's been somebody better. She still has to solve Azarenko, and she's nowhere near Serena's level. Even if Serena declines, I think Maria may go downhill just as fast. I don't see her winning more than two more, maybe three at a push...

Six or seven is great though. The way we're talking about it it almost sounds like failure. Wink

Well, I feel so sorry for her because she has nothing else going for her but an ability to hit a tennis ball... Tongue

She may end up winning as many as Justine Henin and Venus Williams when all is said and done, but getting to ten majors is a mighty task. I had to vote in the negative, although I greatly admire Masha's fight and determination.

RE: Will Maria reach 10 Slams? More?
I can't see her winning 10. Her track record at winning multiple slams a year is obviously not great. she hasn't even won slams in consecutive years.

I think Maria is great and I think having such strong rivals in Serena and Vika has actually driven Maria to try and find new dimensions to her game (i.e. movement).

I just don't know that she has quite the drive to just meet the number she would need to get to 10. With her being far and away the highest paid female athlete in the world, that takes a lot of the motivation to win 10+ slams away! She's not even near the top of the top GOATs and yet she still blows them away in the amount of money she has made.

If her draw is favorable and she does not have to face Serena, Vika and Agnieska (on a good day) she increases her chances of winning a slam event. As long as Serena and Vika are around, I see her winning only 1 or two every couple of years. If she was 22 this would be great, but she just turned 26.

With her current game, I don't see her reaching 10 slams.

No. She will likely add 2-3 more. Once Serena retires, Vika will still be a young stumbling block. Maria's serve is still not at the 2004 or 2008 slam level. I would need to see more consistency in that area and less DF's before she can win #5.

RE: Will Maria reach 10 Slams? More?
Well it all depends on what happens with Serena, Vika, if Petra can pull it together or Li. Serena, Vika and Li haven't had the best of luck with their bodies, and Petra well the only thing she is consistent at is mental madness. I expect for now for Serena to continue to be a thorn in Maria's side. Vika is 50-50 versus Maria in my eye those encounters can go either way. Petra can be a formidable foe once she gets her crap together. Li gave Maria a beat down in Australia after Maria was looking to cruise her way back into the final this year. I think Maria given the current crop of foes can realistically expect a 2-3 more slam haul maybe more if something happens that puts all 4 of the above ladies out of commission for a while. A few things I think that work against Maria in reaching double digits is she has never won multiple slams in a year even when her serve didn't have the problems it does now (it has improved but no where near the weapon it was before the shoulder surgery), she has never defended any of her slams and all of her slam wins have a lengthy span between one another Wimbledon 2004, US Open 2006, Australian Open 2008 and French Open 2012. It is a pretty telling when the biggest thorn in your side, Serena Williams is out of shape/injured from 2005-2007 and late 2010-mid 2011, and you aren't adding to your slam haul from that time frame.

I'm gonna say she wins 2 more, at a push 3 but highly unlikely she wins 6 more.

Serena will be 32 by the time of US open this year, when do you think she will retire?
I just don't see her playing another 3 years although it could happen.

I think she will continue playing for as long as she's a contender.

Well Serena says she plans on playing at least through the next Olympics, and I think she will as long as she can stay relatively healthy.

Ten grand slams is not in the cards for Maria. Even though I admire her tenacity and skill, she has never been one of my alltime favs. Give her credit for what she has achieved both on and off the court with her marketing skills. I agree with the concensus here, that she may win another 2-3 slams and then ciao!Wink
