Will Serena reach 18 Slams? More?
This is a valid question. Serena is #1, she won 2 slams last year. Earlier this year, before the AO, some Tennis pundits were even writing articles about her getting a Grand Slam.
She is considered by many the best player today, some even consider her the all time best!

So my question is will she get 18 slams to reach Martina and Chrissie?
May be even more? Like the 20+ slam bench-mark that very few have ever achieved.

I think she could get 18 -- that's only 3 more. I'm not sure about 20+, but it's quite possible considering there are no big, consistent threats out there. Mostly, it depends on Serena's health and motivation to keep playing.

If you'd ask me if I expect Serena to win another slam my answer would be "yes." But to predict anything beyond that is at least for me impossible, because things can change very quickly in sports. And we also have to consider Serena's age. For a 31 year old to win three (let alone five) more majors would be an outstanding achievement. It's not entirely impossible, but let's see if (and when) she gets to number 16 before we look beyond that. Blame it on my cautious nature when it comes to making predictions. Wink

RE: Will Serena reach 18 Slams? More?
I think she can reach 18 if she can at least manage 2 slam wins this year and given what is left her best shots are Wimbledon and US. However, if she can surprise and win the French her confidence might become super high and she might go on a tear. I think this year and next year are imperative to where she will land in terms of final slam tally. If she can win 3-5 slams within that time frame, I wouldn't discount a win at Wimbledon/US Open even Australia on the weird occasion from 2015 on until her serve really goes she will always be a contender even at 31 Serena is still faster than people 10 years younger than her.

That's key -- her serve, and the free points it can generate. If she can keep that in form, she can keep winning for quite some time.

I think she will get to 18, but probably not anymore. It will depend on how this year goes. She needs to grab as many slams as she can get this year. Next year she will be 32. Vika, Maria, Cibby and others have taken sets off her recently where before they couldn't buy one.

RE: Will Serena reach 18 Slams? More?
I definitely think Serena will reach 18 but beyond that I'm not sure. The rest of this year will obviously tell us a lot about Serena's body. She is an incredibly athlete with superhuman fitness and power. Yet, there is no arguing with age. She has gone through many years on tour and a lot of wear and tear. I expect her to keep her promise and play through Rio but I imagine she will be playing a very limited schedule in that final year and I don't expect her to contend at the French Open after this year or perhaps USO in her last year. Australia she has always done spectacularly well and I think she will always have a great chance there until the day she retires. Wimbledon obviously holds great weight for Serena and Venus and I think Serena will be a heavy favorite there until she retires.

Anything can happen. It is Serena, I can't say I'd be surprised if she even reached 20!

However many more she wins, I hope she adds another FO to her tally.

She's fifteen now? She'll quit on 17 or 18...

Yes, I think she is so much more dominant now than she has been in a decade. The players today just don't seem to be able to hang with her. She may hit 19 or 20 and she will play until she does so as she wants to be mentioned with Chrissie and Martina and Steffi in the top tier.

The question isn't her talent or motivation. It's her body. Injuries will be tougher to avoid than ever as she ages. 20+ would not surprise me.

18 is quite possible as has been pointed out with her dominant serve. Have to remember she's unfortunately getting a little bit more injury prone now too like Fed, who is incidentally the same age, but barring injury and her serve still staying consistent I'd hazard a guess 18 is very much achievable.

That's the other thing one has to consider.
Injuries!
Playing 20 events a year, 4 of them slams, a pace Serena has set for herself this year, will take it's tolls.
Look at Vika!!

BTW, thanks to all that have posted replies and voted on these threads.

We will have to see. Sometimes Serena will just opt out of the next tournament if she does well at a Slam or major tournament. I think a lot of her success this year will stem from her performance at the French. If she can buckle down and win that again, she might go on a tear again. I think this year and next year are her big years to make a big push in terms of raising her rank among the women in terms of slam numbers after that 2015 and beyond she might win 1-3 slams total.

Didn't realize she was playing 20 events. That's a spicy meatball for a 31 year old. Compare that with Fed's severely reduced schedule to put things in perspective. Hope it doesn't backfire on her.

I am of the opinion Serena overloaded her schedule so she can withdraw if she makes it far in the tournaments that matter to her. I doubt she plays the 20. I can see Beijing and either Toronto or Cinci falling by the wayside.

We have 3 slams left, two of which she is defending.
However, she fell out of the first round of France last year, she must be after that one.

We will know in less than 3 months if Serena can do the 18 this year or not.

I think that if Serena is able to win the FO this year, she will have that burden off her back and may even sweep the other majors. Wimby is her best bet with AO and USO right behind. Barring major injuries, 18 is very possible: 20 not far-fetched.
