I concur with you, tented. But I love me some "John Wesley Harding" as well--but "Blood" is still the go-to Bob record for me. I wonder what Kieran will choose?

but wait--do I get to count "The Basement Tapes", and, if so, the "official" or "real" version? Smile

If that gets counted, then it is a tie for me with "Blood". How could I say otherwise since Bob was jammin' with The Band!

ONE favorite dylan album? tough, but i must say that it's usually also Blood On The Tracks for me. it's an album i really wouldn't want to live without (even though i think it's not his Best, which to me is Blonde on Blonde, which is probably one of the top three albums ever made for me).

"John Wesley Harding" is one of only two records which I only ever listen to from start to finish: no breaks, no pauses, no skipping around, no listening to only one or two songs. (The other is Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks")

Yeah, one is a tough call. I'll go three, just as we did the bottom three:

Highway 61 Revisited
Bringing it all back home
Love & Theft

Honourable mentions: the rest of them! But especially Blonde on Blonde, Desire, Saved, Time Out Of Mind, Street Legal...

RE: The Music Box
and now for something completely different... well, far from completely, actually i think Calexico are very much in a Dylan/The Band tradition, just with a heavy mexican flavor added to the Americana. actually, someone mentioned the Jim James/I'm Not There OST version of "Going To Acapulco" - the backing band on that track (as well as others, including Willie Nelson's and Roger McGuinn's) actually is Calexico, and they appear in the movie as well.

it sometimes seems to me that for some weird reason, they might be bigger here (Austrian and Germany) than they are in the US. weird because they do fit in with the Alt-country crowd like Wilco - but while they'd probably be glad to open for Wilco in the US, it'd be the other way around in Austria or Germany.

i think part of the reason is simply that they've always done a lot of touring here, even rather special events - played with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, for example:

since, however, i initially spoke of "completely different", i feel compelled to actually bring in something that's a little more out of line. how about some of this generation's finest? Radiohead. to make the transition easy, i'm picking one of their cutest tunes, in an extra-cute acoustic rendition:

Love the Calexico. Just have to add one for our friend Shawnbm, who's a big Levon Helm man. (Shawn, I love ya, but your signature puts that song in my head most every day!)

One of my favorite songs, from the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, which I visited on my recent music pilgrimage:

I know what you mean, tented. For me as a kid, one of those records was Sgt. Pepper. Since then I have added The Band (their famed second "brown" album) and Sinatra's Only the Lonely. Obviously, John Wesley Harding is a great one too.

I recently watched the film "Rushmore" again. This is the version that's used in the soundtrack for one of the film's more memorable sequences.

Been enjoying old Ragtime piano with my kids, who have always enjoyed ragtime since they went to Walt Disney World in Orlando and saw the pianist playing those old time tunes. I've always enjoyed the sound of the piano played that way.

For some reason, this popped into my head yesterday, and now I can't stop thinking about it. It's like it's on an infinite loop.

PS - The person who put together this video misspelled his name. It's Harry Nilsson. And the name of the song is simply "Coconut."

That's great! Thanks for sharing it.

Have you heard of Michael Hedges? Here's a sample:

went to see Sir Paul McCartney yesterday. almost 3 hours. unbelievable stuff. honestly, blown away, and not just because of stuff like this Wink

even more impressive is how he actually rarely needed extras like that. tight band, great music, no fancy add-ons.

Wow, I didn't think Macca still had it in him. Sounds like a great show!

When was the last time Sir Paul wrote a decent song? Probably has a lot of them but they don't get huge publicity because of his "back catalogue..."
